Description

FFICE,
GEOHGE CLIFFE HATCH, OF CALCUTTA,.INDIA.
IMPROVEMENT VIN POSTAGE-STAMP HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,970, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom lt may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CLIFFE HATCH, of Calcutta, India, Colonel and Deputy Judge Advo cate General in Her Majestys army, have invented certain neW and useful Improvements in Apparatus for holding Postage and other Stamps 5 4and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying Vdravving making part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section or' a box for holding postage-stamps. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box when closed.
This invention consists in lining the reels Yfor holding postage and other stamps, arranged Within a suitable box or case, with fabric or other materia-l, to act upon the edges of the stamps and prevent them from recoiling and springing from their original position when oce Wound thereon, as will be more fully set forth hereafter.
In the drawing, b b represents a series of spools or reels, the anges of Which may be of any desired height so as to receive a large number of stamps, which are Wound upon the reels. These reels are covered With any material, such as cloth, velvet, or other fabric, to give sufcient holding power at the edges ofthe stamps to prevent them from being drawn off too fast, or to recoil into the case or box through the slots formed in the same. The reels may be used singly, or a series of them may be used in the same box, as desired, and they may be made of different Widths, as found most suitable and convenient and available for receipt, bill, or other stamps or labels. The box or case within which are arranged the reels or spools thus constructed may be of any size or forni; but I prefer to use such as I have shown, which, in the present instance, is composed of a short piece of tube, a a, longitudinally divided, and so arranged that one piece acts as alid to be opened and closed. The reels b b are mounted upon a spindle, c, which has its bearings upon the end pieces of the case, and is prevented from shitting its position by its ends being made square to iit a corresponding opening or recess in the ends ofthe case. The top piece of the case a is hinged to the bottom, a, at
the rear side, While the front edges are notched, to form recesses or slots for the stamps to pass freely through when drawn by the hand. The spools or reels are mounted upon the spindles c in such a manner that either may revolve independently of the other.- By this means the with draWal of one class of stamps will not unwind or interfere With those arranged upon the other reels.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s The lining of reels With a fabric or other material, when employed for holding stamps or labels,
in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore shown and described.
G. CLIFFE HATCH, Colonel.
