Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed June 16, 1913. Serial No. 773,881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HARRISON L. STALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martinsville, in the county of Morgan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Shipping Case Cover Sealing Fastener, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon;
This invention relates to vessels for containing or carrying various articles or substances and has reference more particularly to pails or packages in which articles may be shipped and from which the articles may be retailed, the invention relating more specifically to shipping cases having combination cover fastening and sealing appliances, portions of the appliances being adapted for temporarily holding the covers of the packages in place after the packages are lawfully opened and retained while retailing the contents thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a vessel or shipping case with a cover fastener that shall be so constructed as to be adapted for effectually affording sealing protection, especially during shipment of the receptacle or case.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shipping case cover sealing fastener that shall be adapted to be cheaply produced and readily appliedand without being liable to .be accidentally fractured either in application or use, as through twisting strains incidental to the twisting together of wire fasteners.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a combination sealing cover fastener that shall be so constructed as to'be adapted to fasten and seal a vessel cover made of two or more pieces of thin veneer glued or cevmented together so as to prevent access to the package except by breaking the seal or destroying the cover or top of the vessel.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in a container or shipping case of improved construction and provided with a novel cover sealing fastener comprising a plurality of parts adapted for securing and also sealing the cover to the vessel or case, parts of the sealing fastener being adapted for temporarily retaining the cover on the vessel.
The invention consists also in certain novel features of construction and in .the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and further defined in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, as preferably constructed, a portion of the vessel or case being broken away; Fig. 2 is a' fragmentary section approximately on the plane of the line AA in Fig. 1; Fig. .3 isa fragmentary perspective View of the sealing fastener; Fig. 4: is an inverted perspective view of a part of the sealing fastener; Fig. 5 is a section approximately on the plane of the line B B in Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a section approximately on the plane of the line C G in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary section of the sealing fastener partially completed; as when connecting the parts thereof together; Fig. 8 isa top plan of the vessel or shipping case having the invention applied thereto in a slightly modified form; Fig. 9 is a fragmentary plan showing a part of the sealing fastener unfolded; Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the shipping case having a laminated or veener' cover and provided with the improvement in a slightly modified form; Fig. 11 is a fragmentary section approximately on the plane of the line D D in Fig. 10; Fig. 12 is a section on the line E E in Fig. 11; Fig. 13 is a perspective view of one of the parts of the modified form of sealing fastener unfolded; Fig. 14 is a top plan of the modified form of vessel partially broken away and showing the difierent layers comprising the veneer top, portions of the sealing fastener being connected therewith; and Fig. 15 is a fragmentary section as on the plane of the line D D in Fig. 10 showing the sealing fastener partially completed.
Similar reference characters throughout the drawings indicate like elements or features of construction herein referred to.
As illustrative of the construction and application of the invention a bucket or pail type of vessel or shipping case is shown and comprises a body portion or side wall 1 formed of suitable material and provided in its lower portion with a bottom 2, the lower and upper portions of the wall being provided respectively with suitable metallic hoops 8 and 4. preferably drawn tightly into grooves 5 and 6 respectively that are formed as an improvement in the exterior of the wall or body portion, the upper portion of the wall being provided with ears 7 and 8 to. which a bail 9 is connected. A suitable cover 10 is removablyplaced upon the top of the wall and in some cases may have underlying layers 10' and 10 so as to constitute a laminated cover composed of thin veneer arranged with the grain of the different layers in crossed relation, so that the fastening devices shall have contact transversely with the grain of the wood of one or more of the layers without liability of splitting the wood longitudinally of the grain.
The invention comprises two fastening devices which preferably are composed of two pieces of wire respectively and bent substantially alike, one wire being bent at its middle portion to form a loop 11 from which two rod portions 12 and 13 extend so as to lie flat upon the cover of the vessel, the rod portions being bent so as to extend downward along the exterior of the body of the vessel so as to form lug portions 14: and 15 respectively that are suitably connected at a suitable distance apart to the body by forming spiral coils 16 and 17 on the ends of the lug portions respectively and so as to be wrapped about and connected to the hoop 4:. The remaining piece of wire is bent at its middle portion so as to form a loop llfrom which extends two rods 12 and 13 that are bent down to form lugs 14 and 15 that have spiral coils 16 and 17' formed thereon respectively and wrapped about and connected also to the hoop 4; at a suitable distance apart. The loops 11 and 11 are arranged so as to be relatively close to the middle portion of the cover of the vessel and the connections of the lug portions may move hinge-like on the hoop so that the rod portions may be moved away from the cover to permit the latter to be removed from the body portion of the vessel when selling the contents thereof, the lug portions, however, when lying upon the cover acting to retain the cover in its normal position. The rod portions as will be seen collectively have four points of contact with the edge of the cover. In some cases, however, three points of contact may be all that is desired, one of the fastening devices comprising only one rod portion 13 having the lug portion 15f as above described and also bent so as to form a loop 11" that is arranged in proximity to the loop 11, this modification being shown in Fig. 8.
The remaining part of the sealing fastener is composed of a metallic strip or oblong plate bent to constitute a link having a tie portion 18 that extends under the loops 11 and 11' and loop portions 19 and 20 embracing the loops 11 and 11 respectively, there being end portions 21 and 22 on the plate that extend from the loops in superimposed relation upon the tie portion. After partially forming the link as in Fig. 7 the portions 21 and 22 are pressed down upon the tie portion 18 and the three portions are crimped together so as to form a crowning or arched middle portion 23 with the edges of the portions extending downward in proximity one to another, and portions of the sides of the arch thus formed are pressed inward so as to form indentations 2 1 and 25 which lock the several parts together, so that neither portion 22 nor 21 can be drawn away one from the other nor from the tie portion 18 without distorting the portions and making it impossible to again interlock them without a specially devised implement or leaving tell tale distortions or fractures of the metal.
It should be understood that the different portions of the link may be variously connected and secured together, an example of a modified form of connection being illustrated in Figs. 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15, in which the portions 21 and 22 are folded over onto the tie portion 18 as above described so as to link the loops 11 and 11 together, after which perforations 26, 27 and 28 are made at one operation in the portions 22, 21 and 18 without removing any of the metal but forcing the metal through the openings so as to form flanges 29, 30 and 31, one within another, which flanges are turned over as are eyelets so as to be interlocked one with another and effectually secure the different portions of the link together. V
In practical use the cover of the receptacle or case is securely held against displacement and effectually sealed as hereinbefore described in which condition the package is shipped, and when in the hands of the ultimate purchaser may be opened by destroying the link after which the remaining portions of the fastener may be moved apart to permit the removal of the cover, which if again replaced may be temporarily held in position by means of the rodsreplaced to their normal position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is j 1. An improved sealing fastener appliance comprising two wire sections that are each bent to form a loop, the sections being adapted to be connected to a receptable body, and a connecting and sealing device composed of a sheet metal plate bent over at two portions and constituting a tie portion having two loops adapted to be connected to the respective loops of the wire sections, the device having two end portions adapted to be superimposed on the tie portion, portions of the metal of the tie portion and the two end portions of said device being adaptable for non-detachable locking engagement each with the'other.
2. In a sealing fastener, the combination detachably locked to the tie portion and also 10 with a plurality of fastening Wires having to the remaining end portion.
