DENTAL-MATRIX RETAINER.
Application filed September 241, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON B. RIDDLE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Slaughter, in the parish of East Feliciana and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental-Matrix Retainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
One object of the invention is to improve the construction of dental matrix retainers by providing a retainer that can be conveniently and expeditiously regulated so that the matrix can be clamped over the tooth to be treated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a retainer, for carrying out the above object, that can be manufactured cheaply, will be durable, and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accoman in 'drawin formin a dart thereof in. p b 7 b 7 which:
Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of the matrix retainer. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section taken therethrough. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a vertical section through a matrix.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the retainer as an entirety, which includes a body having a pair of spaced guide bars 2 and 3, which are connected, at one end of the body 1 by means of a spaced pair of transversely extending bars 4 and 5, the said bars 4 and 5 having alined transverse openings 6 and 7 formed therein, the walls of the openings being threaded. The side bars 2 and 3 are also connected to each other intermediate the ends of the bars by another transversely extending bar 8, the opposite ends of which are formed integrally with the side bars 2 and 3, and the said bar 8 has a transversely extending opening 9 therein, which is located in alinement with the openings 6 and 7 in the connecting bars 4 and 5. The upper ends of the side bars 2 and 3 are curved in the direction of each other, as at 10 and 11, and have their terminals integrally secured to the lower end of a sleeve 12.

This operating member is located between the side bars 2 and 3 and has one end formed into cylindrical shape, as at 1d, and has the said cylindri cal end extending through the openings in the connecting bars 4c and 5 and the intermediate bar 8, and through an opening formed centrally in a manipulating wheel 16, which is located between the bars e and 5, the walls of the opening being threaded, and the said cylindrical portion of the operating member has threaded engagement with the threaded walls of the openings 6 and 7 and with the wallsof the opening 15 in the manipulating wheel 16. The upper end of the operating member 13 is flattened, as at 17, and extends into the sleeve 10, and has its upper terminal provided with a transversely extending pin 18, the opposite ends of which extend beyond the adjacent sides of the flat portion of the operating member.
The upper end of the operating member 13 carries a matrix, designated 19, the said matrix being formed of a substantially inverted U-shaped piece of spring metal, hav ing its sides provided with a plurality of registering openings 15, adapted to receive the opposite ends of the pin 18.
hen the matrix is positioned around the tooth to be treated, the manipulating wheel 16 is rotated in a direction to cause the downward travel of the operating member 13, resulting in the upper end of the operating member moving downwardly into the sleeve and drawing the sides of the matrix within the upper end of the sleeve, causing the matrix to clamp the tooth. The tightness with which the matrix clamps the tooth, is determined by the distance the operating member is moved downwardly within the body. When it is desired to release the matrix from the tooth, the manipulating wheel is rotated in a reverse direction, causing the forward travel of the oscillating member 13 until the pin 18, carried by the flattened end of the oscillating member is extended beyond the end of the sleeve 12, after which operation the matrix can be removed from the tooth and disconnected from the opposite ends of the pin 18.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A matrix retainer comprising a pair of spaced guide bars, a pair of transversely extending cross bars connecting one end of said guide bars, said cross bars having alined transverse openings, a sleeve connecting the other end of said guide bars, the openings in said cross bars alining with the bore of said sleeve, a matrix operating member having a threaded portion extending through the openings in the cross bars and having a front portion thereon located within the sleeve, a nut fitted on said threaded portion of said operating member and positioned between said cross bars to adjust said operating member, and means carried by said matrix operating member to engage a matrix.
2. A matrix retainer comprising an elongated body having a sleeve at one end thereof, said sleeve having a substantially rectangular bore and a pair of oppositely disposed grooves extending at right angles to said bore, a matrix operating member associated with said body and having a cylindrical portion formed thereon and threadedly mounted within the body, said operating matrix member having a flattened front portion thereon located within the bore of said sleeve, and a pin extending through the back portion of the operating member and adapted to engage the matrix, said pin being adapted to engage the said bore, a matrix operating member associated with said body and having a cylindrical portion formed thereon and threadedly mounted within the body, said operating matrix member having a flattened front portion thereon located within the bore of said sleeve, a matrix having an inverted U- shaped body, the legs of said U-shaped body engaging the opposite sides of the flattened front portion of the matrix operating member, and a pin extending through the front portion of the operating member and the legs of the matrix, said pin being adapted to engage the grooves in said sleeve for the purpose set forth.
