To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. HUBBARD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Printingf i letter or circular at one. impression.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is theV provision of a sectional printing form which shall be made up of a plurality of sheet metal form sections locked upon a bed in which the means holding them in place are so arranged that they will not contact with the ribbon or other inking mechanism and subsequently contact with the sheets being printed and smudge the same. l A
Another object of the invention is to provide printing form sections for use in sectional printing forms which will be strong .v and durable in operation and which may be cheaply constructed.
Other objects and advantages of the in-` vention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following descri tion when considered in connection with t e accompanyingdrawing, illustrating a preferredembodiment thereof.

bed is cut away at each side at 15 to provide recesses in which the strips are secured, the thickness of the strips being preferably substantially equal to the depth of the recesses 15. One of the strips, in the present instance 13, is preferably permanently secured to the bed by screws or similar fastening means 16I and this strip is cut away on its under face adjacent the inner wall of the recess to provide a groove 17 between the strip and the bed in which the end of the printing sections are engaged. Both ends of veach printing form section are bent at 18 at an angle with the body of the printlng form to provide an inclined portion 19 and are bent again at 20 to provide a lip 21 dlsposed in a plane parallel to the body porf tion of the section. The lip 21 at one end ofthe form section is adapted to be inserted, when the section is to be positioned on the bed. in thergroove 17.
The'printing form sections 12 are provided with depending flanges 9 to engage the grooves 10 in the bed 11.
The other strip 14 is preferably detachable and is held in place by screws 22 which may be readily removed. Like the strip 13 this strip isjcut away on its lower side to provide a groove 23 in which the other lips 21 of the form sections may be engaged. The ,groove I23, however, extends almost ',.across'the under face of the strip leaving at the outer edge a rib 24 adapted to rest upon the face of the recess 15, which is parallel with the face of the main portion of the bed. rIhe screws 22 are positioned inwardly of this rib and the parts are so diminished that only the inner edge of the strip 14 rests upon the lips 21 of the form sectionsf'when the strip is positioned.v Thescrewing down,
therefore, of thescrews 22 will firmly and -yieldingly hold the strip and the form sec tionsin place.
Figs.- 2, 3 and 4 show the application of the same fastening means to curved sectional printing forms, therecesses 25 (Fig.
2) being formed by providing channels in the surface of the bed 26 in which the strips 27 and 28, similarfto the strips 13; and 14, are secured b screws 29. When the vform sections are .isposed axially of a curved bed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the fastening means are secured to .the circumferential edges. of the bed in recees sim11ar tothose shown in Fig. 1. The bed 32 in these figures is cylindrical in shape and a number o segmental strip sections 31 abutting at their in Fig. 5, except that theyare curved throughout their length in the form shown in Fig. 2 and curved transversely in the form shown in Fig. 3 to conform tothe shape of the bed.
Asvthe upper .surfaces of the fastening strips in each embodiment are disposed sub stantially flush with the outer surface of the bed, these surfaces of the strips must lie l beneath the outer surfaces lof the printing forms upon which the printin characters 34 are provided and when` so p aced itl will be apparent that they w1ll not contact with vthe inking mechanism and receive ink which later may be transferred to the paper being printed to dirty or smudge the latter.
It will be apparent also that the provision of the incline portion 19 to connect the lips 21 with the'body of the printing form 'sections will reduce materially any weakening eHect that `the of-settingof these lips from the plane of thebody portion might have and these portions also permit the printing form sections to be positioned and 'locked in place much more readily than vwlouldbe the case were the hps connected with` the body portion by portions disposed at right angles to the two.
It will` be obvious that various changes may be made in the form and construction of the parts and their arrangements without departing from the spirit and scope of our of benetions consisting of thin'metal plates having 'printing characters struckl up from the body thereof, 'said sections being provided with depending anges along the longitudinal edges thereof and being arranged side by side on saidv bed in abutting relation with said flanges disposed in said grooves, depressions in said bed transversely of said sections, the ends of` said sections being inclined downwardly and bent outwardly in substantial parallelism with said bed, fastening strips in said'grooves provided with rabbeted edges overlying the ends of a plui rality of said sections, and means for securing-said strips to said bed with the upper surfaces thereof below the plane ofthe printing surfaces of said sections.
