MICHAEL J. O. MALLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ASBESTOS BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed Kay 1, 1918. Serial No. 94,840.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. O. MALLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Asbestos Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in baskets, and, more particularly, that form of basket used as a receptacle for waste paper.
It is the object of my invention to provide a construction of basket in which reinforced asbestos sheet or board is employed, whereby there is produced a fire-proof receptacle.
The invention will be more fully understood from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of mybasket. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, aportion of the inner layer of the bottom being broken away to show the reinforcement. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing a corrugated sheet. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section through one corner of the basket shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is/a similar view showing a modified construction of the bottom. Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a still further modification of the construction of the bottom, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged section showing the construction of the upper rim of the basket. y
The form of basket shown in the drawings is of frusto-conical shape, the body of the basket being formed of inner and outer plies 10 and 11, respectively, of asbestos sheet or board cemented together as by a binder composed of silicate of soda, or the like, and having sandwiched between them a sheet 12 of reinforcing wire fabric. Fig. 3, the seam is preferably formed by lapping the asbestos sheet facings as illustrated at 13, the lap-joint being cemented. The bottom of the basket is formed of a pair of asbestos disks 14, 15, spaced some distance above the bottom of the side walls, as shown in Fig. 4, and reinforced by a pair of sheetmetal straps 16 arranged at right-angles and between the disks 14, 15, each of the straps being turned downwardly and then upwardly about the lower edge of the side walls, as illustrated at 17, in Fig. 4:. To complete the construction a U-shaped metallic rim 18 As shown in (Fig. 4), having its upper edges inturned, as at 19', 1s slipped over the lower edge of the side walls and over the downturned ends II of the straps, securing rivets 20 being employed to hold the parts in their assembledposition. By the construction described it will be noted that the inner edge 19 of the bottom r m 18 forms a shoulder, or ledge, upon wh ch the bottom of the basket may rest, the rim furthermore serving as securing and masking means for the reinforcing straps 16. p
The upper rim of the basket is preferably stiffened by an additional annulus 21 cut from asbestos sheet, or board, and cemented 1n place, as shown inFig. 7. A U-shaped metallic upper rim 22, riveted in place as-at 23, finishes the upper edge of the basket, this rim also preferably, having its edges inturncd, as at 24, the outer inturned'edge 21 serving to mask the lower edge of the stillemng strip 21, as is apparent from Fig. 7
The complete basket as above described, may be sub ected to any of the known treatments for hardening and finishing the asbestos, as by dipping the completed basket into a bath of earthy matter, such as a thin clay mixture, and then into a bath of sodium silicate, by which process the surface of the asbestos becomes coated with a firmly adher- 1ng layer of earthy matter, which may be of any desired color, bound with the sodium silicate.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated two modifications of the construction of the bottom of the basket. In both of these modi' fications the metallic rim, which forms the lower edge of the basket, has an inturned flange 30 which extends beneaththe bottom and serves to support the same. In Fig. 5 the bottom is shown as comprising upper and lower disks 31 and 32 of asbestos sheet, or board, inclosing between them a disk 33 of sheet metal. The compound bottom thus formed is secured in place as by rivets 34 passing through the flange 30 of the bottom rim.
The construction of Fig. 6 is identical with that of Fig. 5, save that the sheet metal intermediate the bottom member 33 of the former figure is replaced by a perforate metallic reinforcement which may be in the form of a wire fabric 35, similar to the wire fabric 12 used for reinforcing the side walls.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the basket side wall as constructed of corrugated, reinforced sheet, designated 40, the"corrugations running longitudinally of the basket. This form of corrugated sheet is the same as that shown and described in my prior application Serial No. 85,330, filed March 20, 1916, and is peculiarly useful and desirable in the present service by reason of its strength and stifi'ness.
While I have shown and described in considerable detail some specific embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that these are illustrative only, and for the purpose of making the invention more clear, and that I do not regard the invention as limited to these details, nor to any of them, except in so far as such limitations are included within the terms of the following claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as is permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a basket of the character described, side-walls comprising a plurality of sheets of asbestos hardened by earthy matter and cemented. together and having sandwiched between them a foraminous metallic reinforcement, a bottom spaced above the lower edges of the side-walls and comprising upper and lower sheets of asbestos having sandwiched between them metallic reinforcement, and a U-shaped metallic rim embracing the lower edges of the side-walls and extending upwardly and secured to the said bottom for supporting the same.
MICHAEL J. O. MALLEY.
It is hereby aertified that the name of the pawnuw in Letters Patent. No. 1,209,316, granted December 19, 1916, for an improvement in Asbestos Bmkebs,"
was erroneously wribtan and printed "Michael J. O. Malley," whereas said name should have been written and printed as Michael J. 0 Malley; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction tbarein that the same may conform to the record of the case in tha Patent Offioe.
Signed and sealed this 20th day of February, A. D., 1917.
I". W. H. CLAY,
Acting C'ommiuioner of Patents.
