HARRY N. HEMPSTEAD, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
CIGAR-TIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed March 19, 1913. Serial No. 755,321.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY N. I-InMPsrEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, Marion county, and State of Indiana, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Tips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cigar tip closures and its object is to provide a removable tip forming member for a cigar which shall afford a closed end for the cigar, which may be removed so as to open a draft hole into the filler, without the necessity of cutting or biting off the end, and which may be utilized to receive the imprint or representation of a trade-mark or advertising matter.
WVith these ends in view, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the device hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is a section through a cigar showing my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2, a detail end view of the head of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detail view of the other end of device; Figs. 4 and 5 detail side and end views of a closure having a modified form of shank; Figs. 6 and 7, detail side and end views of a closure of another modified form of shank; Figs. 8 and 9, detail side and end views of still another form.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a cigar. The closure tip or plug is preferably of wood, paper or papier-mach and comprises a substantially conical head, 2, shaped to conform to the cigar to complete the tapered end portion thereof. The plug has a shank 3 adapted to extend within the filler and around which the wrapper of the cigar is wrapped so as to cover the shank and to hold the closure in place. When in place, the shank extends within the cigar body and is tightly held thereby while the head 2 abuts against the end of the cigar andcloses the end thereof. The shank thus forms a core about which the cigar is formed at its tip end, and the head of the plug forms the tip or end of the cigar which is of the ordinary shape or contour.
When the closure is removed, an entrance into the filler through the wrapper is provided which will afford means of draft through the cigar. The removal of the closure also leaves the end of the cigar square with the edges of the leaves of the tobacco exposed the same as when an ordinary cigar is cut off at this end. The necessity of cutting or biting old the end of the cigar is thus obviated.
The plug provides a convenient means for the imprint of a trademark, the name of the manufacturer or advertising matter, thereby enabling the ordinary paper band to be dispensed with.
In Figs. 4 and 5, a form of closure is illustrated in which the shank is tapered, the reduction being toward the inner end of the shank. In Figs. 6 and 7, a closure with the shank tapered in a direction opposite to that shown in Figs. 4 and 5, is illustrated. In Figs. 8 and 9, the shank is in the form of a screw.
It is clear that any of the various forms of shanks illustrated or similar forms capable of enabling the wrapper to be tightly engaged therewith, may be utilized in the employment of my invention, without departing from the principle thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A removable cigar tip adapted to be separably embodied in the body of the cigar and comprising a conical head shaped to conform to the contour at the head of the cigar and when in use to complete and finish out said head and having a centrally disposed shank adapted to extend into the cigar and to be retained therein by fric tional contact only, the shoulder between the shank and the head of said tip being a substantially straight face which when in use is adapted to abut closely against a correspondingly formed straight face on the end of the cigar, whereby the end of the cigar is closed and protected and at the same time a central perforation therein is formed when the tip is removed, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 12th day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and thirteen.
HARRY N. HEMPSTEAD. [L.S.]
