E .ZRA J. ASHTON, OF UTIOA, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURN-DASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,928, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA J. AsHToN, of Utica, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Ohurns, of which the followin g is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to barrel-churns; and consists in the novel construction of the dasher.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of the churn. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the dasher, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection of a portion of the dasher.
I construct the barrel A and cover E of my churn in any of the ordinary improved methods and out of any suitable materials. I make the dasher in two parts, C and D. The lower or main portion C is made bell-shaped, and provided with a series of holes, a., arranged in the same vertical and horizontal lines, and running in a slanting direction from its outer to its inner side.l This is securely attached to the end of the handle B. Immediately over this bell-shaped portion is placed a bell-shaped cap, D, with its sides cut away so as to leave fmgers I) equal in number to the vertical rows of holes c, and is so arranged that the` fingers will come directly over the holes. The sides of the cap are made more ilaring than those of the part C, so that when in position the `ngers will stand ont a little distance from the holes, and as clearly shown in Figs.l and 2. The edges of the ngers b may be made beveling, so as to make their corners or edges sharp, as seen in Fig. 3. The cap D has a square'opening in its top, so as to fit immovably on the handle B, which is made square near its lower end for that purpose, and it is held in place by a pin, c, passing through the handle, as clearly shown in Fig. l. It may be adjusted at any desired distance from the lower portion C by inserting washers between them.
The operation of a dasher thus constructed in its upward and downward movements upon the cream is apparent. The cream, being constantly forced b ackward and forward through the openings c and against and about the fingers b, must be quickly broken up; and from the peculiar form of the dasher the butter will be gathered as fast as it is separated from the cream.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A churn-flasher, consisting of the bell-shaped portion C and the cap D, when constructed and arranged for operation, substantially as herein described.
EZRA J. ASHTON.
