Description

tant' @met tilts.
J. H. STEPHES, ORAGE COURT-HOUSE, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 88,095, dated Merreh 23, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Y To all whom 'it may concern.-
4that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and` to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Thenature of my invention consists in the' polygonal-shaped barrel, or tub, and in theeonbination of the dasher with the breakers, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same,
I will now proceed todescribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and
Figure 2, a sectional side elevation.
A represents an octagon barrel, but may be of any number of sides desired.
'This barrel is covered with a lid, B, made in halves, one of .which is hooked securely to the barrel, as shown in the drawings.
In the barrel A, diagonally across, is placed a frame, which is composed of the top and bottom bars, O-O, and side-boards, D D, the latter being provided with vone or more holes, a a, for the cream to pass through.
Through the centre of the bars 0 C, a vertical shaft, E, is passed, which rests and revolves in a suitable box, F, in the centre ofthe bottom of the barrel A.
The upper end of the shaft E passes through the centre of the lid B, and is, at a suitable point above saidlid, provided with a pinion, Gr, and held in proper position by a bent bar, H, which is secured to the lid B.
The pinion Gf gears into a semicircular cog-segment,I, which is secured to a lever, J, said lever being pvoted to the lid B, and provided with a handle at each end, so that by working the lever backward and forward, the shaft E is being turned alternately from one side to the other.
The shaft E is, inside of the frame C D, provided with two smaller frames, placedat right angles to each other, and the upper extending a short distance below the upper bar of the lower frame.
These frames are composed of top and ybottom bars K K, and side bars L L, which latter are rounded on the outside, the better to cut the cream as the shaft is turned.
Near one side of the frames, K L, thus formed, is placed, an upright, sqnare,"fourcornered bar, M, secured to the bars K K in such a manner that when these frames are turned with the shaft E, one of the corners will be continually cutting the cream.
By this arrangement, butter can be made in very short time, and with great ease, as the lever J is worked by both hands.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the stationary frame C D and rotating frames K L K L, when the latter are placed at right angles from each other, and one above the other, upon the shaft E, within the stationary frame C, and within the polygonal churn-box A, all constructed, arranged, and operating as herein shown and described. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 29th day-of September,
J. H. STEPHENS. Witnesses:
T. W. WEEDON, JAS. L. ROBINSON.
