CARD-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led May 5, 1914. Serial No. 836,492.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. NEUMANN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a card holder for use in holding cards or tickets in position so that they can be individually removed when desired.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a card or ticket holder particularly adapted for use in railway mail cars for holding a number of tickets or cards which are placed upon or secured in the usual way to a member carried on the mail bag and which card or ticket indicates the destination of the mail bag.
The device is so arranged and constructed that a large number of tickets can be conveniently arranged thereon and individually removed when they are to be used, the removal of the cards being quickly accomplished, thus not only saving time in obtaining and applying the cards but also keeping the cards in a flat condition so that they will retain their stiffness and can be readily slipped into the usual holder attached to a mail bag.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference'is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the card holder; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a substantially U-shaped frame l0 preferably formed of sheet metal and having sides 11 thereof formed with vertical slots 12, the said sides being channel shaped in cross section to provide front and rear guides 13 between which a series of curved plate springs are held in relative position byk the guides 18 to eXert a lifting power on a channel shaped plate 15 which is mounted in the frame and has lugs 16 projecting from its ends and passing through the slots 12, the said lugs terminating in lateral ears 17. Thebottom 18 of the frame'lO is of a shape similar to the plate 15 and the end of thelowermost spring engages and is seated in the bottom 18, whereas the end of the uppermost spring engages the under side ofv the plate 15, as shown.
Projecting towa rd each other from the upper ends of the frame 10 are a plurality of opposed stopV members 19 which limit the upward movement of the plate 15, acted upon by the springs. 14, the said stop members having their front edges 20 spaced from the upper ends of the front guides 13, ,thus providing slots ,21. Apertured lugs 22 are secured to the rear of the frame for the purpose of securing the device to they wall, but it will lbe understood that some other attaching means can' be employed, such as a spring-like clip 23 secured to the rear of the frame, and which clip can be used for securing the device to a table or the like.
In the use of the device, when it is desired to fill the same with a number of tickets or cards, a batch of the cards is placed upon the stop members19 and a downward pressure is exerted on the medial portion of the top card, thus pressing the edges of the cards downwardly beyond the stop members so that the cards will be arranged upon the movable plate 15. Upon releasing the downward pressure the expansion of the lift springs will cause the plate to `move upwardly so that the uppermost card willl abut against the underside of the stop members and thus the cards will be held in position for use. It will be noted that the uppermost card alines with theslots 2l, and thus when the operator desires to remove the card he simply places his finger on the uppermost card and, pulling outwardly thereon, removes the card through the slots. The removal of the card causes the plate 15, acted upon by the springs, to move upwardly so that the face of the next card will abut against the under side of the stop members vand this card will then be ready to be removed from the holder. Therefore it will be seen that with a device of the character described each time that one card is removed another will be arranged in position for removal and the cards, when held in the holder, will be prevented from becoming creased or having their edges broken or torn, while at the same time the cards can be quickly removed when desired.
As mentioned heretofore, the device is, particularly adaptable for use in mail cars to' hold the cards generally used on mail'b'ags to indioate thedestination thereof, although it will be understood that Vthe card holder can be adapted for various other purposes. HavingY thus described my invention, l.
Vclaim In a device ofthe class described, in combination, a pair of upright channel-shaped members forming the corner sides ofV aV Yframefa Vbottom member having four fiangesengaging the inner sides of said Channel-shaped members, a pair of angle iron Ystop members secured at theupper end of leach channel-shaped member to provideV horizontal strips, thertwo sides of the channel-shaped member at the front of the bottom member being' reduced in length with their upper edges arranged belowr the planeV of said horizontal strips, a channel-shaped Copies of this patent may be obtainedV for Vplate 4adaptedto Contact slidably with the Y sides of said channel-shaped members, and a series of lat'leaf springs oppositely arched 'With their ends and center alternately coni tacting, said Channel-shaped plate resting upon the uppermost Vof saidsprings, the
Vgreater part of the edges of said ilat springs ln testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
