MATCH-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 19, 191e.
Application led October 5, 1915. Serial No. 54,133.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, PETER S. Llame, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new land useful Improvements in Match-Safes,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of special receptacles and packages, and more specifically to improvements in match safes.
The object of my invention is to provide a match safe having a 'feed and lighting arrangement whereby every match withdrawn will automatically be lighted' as it is withdrawn. Persons will therefore not be able tofiill their pockets with matches from this sa e.
My safe is not only simple and economical in constructionand operation, but enforces such a saving in matches that for cigar stands it is much cheaper than the devices which remain lighted constantly.
I Other objects of this'invention not at this time more particularly -enumerated, will be clearly understood from the detailed description and drawings forming a part of this specification.
Furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and 'combination of parts more particularly described in the following specification and embodied in the claims appended hereunto and formingV a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings, which are 35 merely illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved match safe. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a verticaltransverse sec- 40 tional view taken on the line 3-'-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of` the spring arrangement for the follower plate.
Referring further to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate 45 similar parts throughout the Vrespective views, 1 designates a base Vplate upon which is mounted a supporting-block 2 `having an inclined top. A channel guide member 3 is secured upon the upper face of said block and along the length thereof.
A casing 4, adapted to register with the upper face of said block, is provided with oppositely disposed flanges 5 upon the under face thereof, said flanges being adapted 'to 55 slidably engage with the channel guide memcover being formed with an upturned portion 8 which, when the cover is closed, will be in spaced apart relation with respect to the upper end of the front face 4a.
A roll of igniting paper 9 is mounted upon a bearing 10 secured to the upper end of the front face 4a of the casing. A strip of said igniting paper is adapted to pass between a guide member 11 secured upon one side of the upwardly .projecting ends of said front face 4a and said cover, between said ends and around a T-shaped guide member 12 mounted upon the other side, thence between said ends and to a point adjacent the outer side of the upturned portion 8, where it is secured by a clip 13. Catches 14 are mounted upon said cover and are adapted to engage with lugs 15 upon the side of the casing 4. Y i
A match container' 16, is adapted to t within the casing and be supported in raised vposition above the bottom thereof by supports 17 'mounted upon the inside of said casing. A slot 18 is formed in the front face of the container, said slot being adapted to register with the slot 6 in said casing. The bottom of said container is cut away at 19 a certain distance inwardly from the front face thereof. Horizontal slots 2O are formed in the sides of said container near the upper edge thereof, and extend to a point near the front face of'said container. A member 21, forming a false back for said container, is provided with outwardly extending flanges at the upper end thereof, said flanges being adapted to slidably engage with the slots 20.
A rectangular metallic strip 22, one arm of which forms the topv of said container, while the other arm forms'the back thereof, is provided with a leaf spring 23 vsecured at one end to said back, and havingl a pusher member 24 mounted upon the other end thereof. y Y
A lift handle 25 is slidablymounted withinthe slots 6 and 18 in said casing and container, respectively, said handle, having a Vplatemember 26 mounted transversely upon the inner end thereof. Coil springs 27 are mounted upon both sides of said plate member, one end of each of said springs being secured thereto while the other end 'is secured to the bottom of said casing. Said plate member is adapted to register with the cut away portion 19 in the bottom of said container. A follower plate 28 is mounted upon coil springs 29 in such manner as to abut the under face of said plate member 26 when the handle 25 is in inoperative position and to abut the under face of saidcontainer when said handle is raised, Vthereby closing the cut away portion 19 to yprevent the matches 30 from dropping through the opening while the handle is raised.
From theforegoing descriptio-n it is obvious that when the match container is filled or partially filled with matches, the false back v2l will be maintained in compression against said matches by the spring actuated pusher member 24e, thereby keeping matches toward the front end of the container. As the handle 25 is raised, the plate member 2G will engage with the lower ends of the first row olf-matches and force them upwardly through the opening between the upper end of the front face la of the casing and the upturned end 8 of the cover. As the stem of the matches project through said opening one of them may be grasped and withdrawn, whereupon the frictional engagement of thc head'of the match with the igniting paper willfignite said match.
The utility, adaptability, and Vadvantages of my improved form of match safe'being obvious, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
'Having now described and pointed out the new and useful features olf-my invention, vI do not limit myself to the shape of certain parts' where the shape is not essentiaLnor do VI restrict myself to the exact details of construction sho-wn and described, but mean and intend to claim all equivalents and variations thereof not departing inprinciple from my invention, and falling within the purview of the appended claims. What I claim as my invention and Vdesire to secure by LettersPatent'is :1 o
1. A match safe consisting of a weighted base, a match container removably `mounted upon said base, said container formedwith an upwardly extending opening in the top said container y edge of the casing, a cover member mounted upon said casing and having the forward end thereof upturned and spaced apart from the front face of said casing, igniting paper mounted upon said casing and adapted to form a lining for the interior walls of said front'face and said upturned portion of said cover, a match container mounted within said casing and provided withhorizontal slots near the upper edge thereof, a spring actuated flange follower plate mounted with- Vin said container andslidably mounted within said slots, and means slidably mounted within said casing andV said container for ejecting a plurality of matches.
8. A match safe o-f the character described consisting of a base, a casing slidably mounted upon saidV base*A and provided with a vertically disposed slot in the front face thereof, a cover pivoted to saidl casing and having the forward end thereof upturned to form thel rear'wall of a match withdrawal aperture, a match container mounted within said casing provided with horizontal slots near the upper edge and a vertical slot in the front face thereof, a spring actuated flanged follower mounted within said container and slidably engaged with said horizontal slots,
,means 'slidably mounted withinsaid vertical slots adapted to eject a plurality of matches through said withdrawal vopening, and means mounted upon said casing and forming a lining for saidY withdrawal opening whereby the matches willbe ignited upon withdrawal therefrom.
4. A match safe consisting of a base, a casing mounted uponsaid base, provided with a vertical'V slot `disposed in the Vfront face thereof, a lcover hingedly mounted upon fthe; casing and having the forward end thereof vupturned to Vform the rear wall of a'match withdrawal* aperture, a match container mountedwithin said casing provided with a vertical slot in the front face thereof registering with the first vertical slot, the bottom plate member of said container having a portion removed, `a handle ejecting means, a follower mounted upon springs to provide 'closure meansfor the Vsaid opening in the bottom plate member when the operating handleis raised.
Y ln testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature hereto.
