To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Knockdown Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to knockdown tables such as are adapted to have the legs removed for folding, or packing the table in a small space for storage or transportation.

An object is to provide a simple, durable device for securing the legs in position, which will allow ready and convenient removal and replacement of the legs.

Another object is to so arrange the leg-securing devices that they may be conveniently used in connection with a simple and durable drawer support, and that when in use, such support may additionally brace the table. a

A feature of such a construction is that a portion of the drawer support and leg-holding device, may be secured by the same means.

My invention is hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the essential characteristics are set forth in the claims.

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, Fig. 1 shows one form of a table which may conveniently embody my invention, in which, 10 is the flat top of the table; 11 the legs, and 12 the depending apron portion extending between the legs beneath the table top. 14 indicates a drawer, the front of which is shown as forming the apron for that side of the table. With my invention, the apron portions 12 may be braced by each other and the legs secured in position by a sheet metal member 15 having a flat'rectangular portion 16 adapted to fit against a beveled surface of the table leg. In Fig. 2 this surface is shown as extending between the nearest adjacent edges of the apron portions, and the sheet metal securing member has laterally extending wings 18 lying against the inner sides of the apron members and secured thereto by suitable screws 19. At the lower edge of the portion 16 of the leg-securing member, is provided a slot 20, extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, and the corners of the metal adjacent the slot are-bent inwardly as at 22. This slot is adapted to receive a screw 23,

' preferably extending through a washer 24.

When the leg is in position, the inwardly turned corners 22, acting on the washer and screw, provide in effect a nut lock, preventing the screw becoming loosened. The laterally extending wings 18 may rest against the inner edges of the apron members 12, or, if desired, may rest against and be secured to filler or distance blocks 25, preferably secured to the apron members and adapted to abut the table leg at one edge. When these distance blocks are used, a smaller portion of the table leg need be cut away, for the securing member, and if it is desired to have the front face of the drawer extend from one leg of the table to another, the blocks 25 on the sides of the leg toward the drawer will act as stops for the front of the board 30 of the drawer, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:.

The leg-securing members are preferably affixed to the top of the table by inwardly turned ears 32, resting against the under side of the top and provided with suitable openings for screws 33. A third horizontal ear 35 integral with the intermediate portion 16, is turned outwardly, fitting into a shallow recess 36 in the top of the 1e and provided with openings for screws 3 extending into the table top. To additionally brace the leg and guide the same when being put into position, I provide a pin 40 extending upwardly from 'the top of the leg and engaging an opening in the car 35 and fitting a recess 11 (Fig. 7) in the table top 10. As shown, the drawer l4; slides in ways 42, composed of angle irons, each having its vertical side extended at the forward end and turned laterally at 44:, and fitting into a recess in one of' the blocks 25 and secured thereto by the screws 19, which pass through the wing members 18 of the sheet-metal legsecuring member and through these lateral extensions 44. The other ends of these ways extend to the opposite apron member 12 and have similar laterally extending ears secured to this apron member by screws. These securing screws may be the lower screws extending through the wing of the leg-securing member. As the front board of the drawer forms all or a portion of the apron between the adjacent legs it is desirable to additionally brace these legs by connecting the forward portions of the slideways 42 by a connecting member 45. As shown, this member is an angle-iron secured to the slide-ways, which are, in turn, secured to the legs by the blocks 25, as described' The end portions of this brace are flattened as at 17, and extended beyond the slideways to the apron members, where ears 18 are formed at the end of the strip. These ears abut the apron members and are secured thereto by screws or other suitable means. It willbe seen that this construction is very convenient, in that the distance pieces or blocks 25, form abutments or stops for the ends of the front part of the drawer, which. fills the space between two of the legs and forms the apron for that side of the table, as well as permitting the securing of the ears 1-1- with the same screws which secure the lower portion of one of the wing members 18, as described. The securing of the drawer supports to the inner sides of the blocks 25 provides for hiding these metal parts'from view at all times, even while the drawer is pulled forwardly. 1

The screw 23, which secures the leg to the intermediate portion 16 of the sheet metal member, may be a large wood screw engaging the wood of the leg, but I prefer to provide an externally threaded sleeve 46 in a recess in each of the legs, tightly engaging the wood to prevent rotation, These sleeves are internally threaded to receive the screws 23. To remove or replace the leg, it is only necessary to loosen the screws 23 and draw the leg downwardly, which draws the pin 40 out of engagement with the opening in the ear 35 and the recess in the table top and draws the screw from the slot 20. To replace the leg, this operation is reversed, the pin 10 being inserted in the opening in the ear 35, and the screw 23 caused to enter the slot, the upper end of the leg is brought against the table top, and the screw is then tightened until its washer 24 depresses the raised corners 22 at each side of the slot. Spring actionof these corners then tends to prevent the loosening of the screw.

It will be seen that by my invention the leg is very permanently 'held in position,

Having thus described my invention, wha I claim is:

1. The combination, with a table top and legs, of a depending leg-securing member having integral ears abutting and secured to the table top and havinga fiat portion engaging a surface of the table leg and having an ear extending overthe top of the leg, positioning means on the table leg engaging said last mentioned ear, and a screw extending through said fiat portion and engaging the table leg. 7

2. The combination, with a table top and legs, of pairs of depending members adapt ed to engage each leg, a leg-holding member having surfaces abutting and secured'to each pair of said depending members and having flat integral ears abutting and securedlto the table top'and having a flat intermediate portion, there being an integral ear' extending from theintermediate portion and over the top of the leg, an upward projection on the leg, an opening in said last'mentioned ear to receive said projection, and a screw for drawing the leg toward the leg-holding member. f

3. The combination, with a table top and legs, of pairs of depending members adapted to engage two sides of each leg, a sheet metal member having surfaces abutting and secured to each pair of said depending members and having inwardly turned integral ears abutting and secured to the table top legs, of a fiat sheet metal member for securing each of the legs comprising a flat portion, two flat wings extending from the sides thereof and at an angle thereto and lying in a plane substantially at right angles to each other, ears integral with each of said wings and with the intermediate strip adapted to abut and be secured to the table top, one of said ears lying over the top of the leg, a projection on the top of the leg, and an opening in the last mentioned ear to receive said projection, and means for removably securing the leg to the strip.

5. The combination, with a table top, apron members and a leg, of a device adapted to be secured to the apron members and hold the leg in place, said device comprising an intermediate body portion, wings extending therefrom at substantially forty-five degrees thereto, lips on the upper ends of the wings secured to the table top, a lip on the upper end of the intermediate body portion extending to the opposite side from the wings, means on the top of the leg positioned by the last mentioned lip, and means for securing the lower portion of the fastening device to the leg.

6. A device of the character described for removably securing a table leg to the table, comprising a sheet metal plate having edge flanges at substantially forty-five degrees to the intermediate portion of the plate, top lips extending inwardly from the edge flanges, and a top lip extending outwardly from the intermediate portion and having an opening through it, there being an opening in the lower part of the intermediate portion.
