SHIRT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES NIGHTIN- GALE, a citizen of the United States, and re siding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to shirts and particularly to shirt bodies, and the object thereof is to improve the manufacture of shirt bodies and to reduce the expense thereof, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a shirt body made as hereinafter described and claimed.

My improved shirt body is made from a single piece of material and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separateparts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an extended view of a single piece or blank from which my improved shirt body is made; Fig. 2 a front View of the shirt body complete; Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4: a section on the line H of Fig. 2; and showing a modification.

In the practice of my invention, I form from any suitable fabric material the blank shown at a in Fig. 1 and the opposite side edges 04 of which are parallel and in the top edge corners of which are formed arcshaped recesses a and spaced apertures a from which the arm holes are formed, and between the apertures a and the recesses a the top edge of the blank is inclined outwardly and upwardly as shown at of, and between said apertures the edges of the blank are inclined inwardly and upwardly as shown at a", and the central top edge portion of the blank is cut out to form an elongated recess a which constitutes a part of the neck opening a shown in Fig. 2, and the rest of which is formed by the areshaped recesses a when the blank is folded to form a shirt body as shown in Fig. 2. In forming the said shirt body, the side edges a of the blank are folded inwardly along the lines a and stitched to the body of the blank along the lines a, and this provides two front flaps .or flies a which Specification of Letters Patent.

extend in a straight line from the neck opening to the bottom of the shirt body and which are provided one with buttons 6 and the other with corresponding button-holes.

In the manufacture of shirt bodies the overlapping edges of the front flaps or flies must always be made double, and it is the usual custom to face the same, but with my improvement the entire body of the shirt is practically formed in cutting out the blank a, all that is necessary being to fold the side portions of the blank along lines extending from the central bottom portion of the arm holes to the bottom of the shirt, to provide the neck opening a with the usual band and connect the top shoulder parts a and a", and apply the sleeves to the arm-holes a.

In connecting the top edges a and a to form the shoulders or yoke of the shirt said edge portions are folded together and stitched as shown at (Z13 in Fig. 3, and this makes a strong shoulder or yoke portion, and I may also fold the side portions of the blank under the arm-holes and extending therefrom to the bottom of the blank inwardly as shown at a in Fig. 4, and stitch the same so as to form reinforcing beads or ribs on the inner side of the shirt body at the opposite sides thereof.

From the foregoing description it' will be seen that the entire shirt body is made from a single blank formed and folded as shown and described, and in this way the cost of a shirt body is reduced to a minimum, and it will be understood that any suitable material may be employed. I also perferably provide the top shoulder and neck portions of the garment with lines of stichings a to reinforce the said portions and said lines of stitchings are preferably applied when the garment is in a blank form.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A shirt body composed of a single sheet having parallel opposite side edges, said sheet being provided at its opposite corners with arc-shaped recesses forming the side and front portions of the neck opening of the shirt and centrally with a recess which forms the back part of the neck opening, and said sheet being also provided at its top edge thereof and midway between the central portion and the arc-shaped corner re- .cesses with apertures which form the sleeve openings, the parallel side edges of the shirt being reinforced from the neck openings to the bottom of the shirt body, and the opposite sides of the shirt being folded inwardly and stitched longitudinally to reinforce the sides ofsaid shirt from the sleeve openingsto the bottom thereof. I

2. A shirt body composed of a single sheet having parallel opposite side edges, said sheet being provided at its opposite top corners V with are-shaped recesses forming the side and V shaped corner recesses with apertures Which form the sleeve openings, and the top edge portions of said sheet between the sleeve openings and, the corner recesses, and the top edges between the sleeve openings and the central portion of the sheet being folded and interlocked by passing the folded edge of one part Within the folded edge of the other part, said folded and interlocked edges be ing stitched by parallel lines of stitchings to form the shoulders or yoke of a shirt and the parallel side edges being stitched in lines extending from the bottom of the neck openings to the bottom of the shirt to form front flies composed of a plurality of thicknesses of material and having fastening devices.
