' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3.0; 1914.
Application fild September 2, 1913. Serial No. 787,575.
To all'iohom it m (lg/concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. BonnK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Bands for Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in collar bands for shirts, the object of the invention being to provide a shirt at the col- 'lar with integral attaching devices which dispense with the necessity for independent buttons to connect the ends of the collar band and to attach the ordinary collar to the shirt.
A further object is to provide a garment with attaching members of the same material as the garment, and which form an in tegral part of the garment.
A further object is to provide an improved construction of collar band which may be readily attached to any ordinary shirt and which contains its own attaching devices.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists incertain novelfeatures of construction and combinations and ar rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed-out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a. fragmentary. perspective view illustrating my improved collar band on a shirt. Fig. 2 is a view illustrating a blank constituting one half of my improved collar band, and. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section on an enlarged scale through the collar band on 'the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
1 represents a shirt and '2'my improved collar band which is composed of two pieces 3, 3. One of these ieces is shown in Fig. 2 and is flat in the orm of a blank. Both pieces are preciselyalike and are of the material of which the band is made, such for example as linen or other woven tabrlc.
l ll piece 3 is folded on a center longitudinal told line 4 and is also folded on lines 5 adjacent its edges. 50
In other words, the edges of the piece 3 are turned in aztter the piece is folded on the hue 4, and when the two pieces 3, 8, are together, the in w'ardly turned edges give to the collar band at its Ollie! edge, an eight-ply thickness as seen clearly inl ig. 3, which thickness 15 Se cured by lines of stitchingo. The pieces 3, I
3 at their lower edges are located at opposite faces of the shirt and sewcdto the shirt by a lineof stitching '4". One end of the collar band formed by the pieces 3, 3, is extended beyond the edge of the shirt and cut out forming a locking ton ue 8, and the lines of stitching throughout the collar band extend throughout the edge of this locking tongue to securely hold the several thicknesses of material together. The other end of the collar band is provided with an opening 9 through which the tongue 8 is projected, and a second tongue 8 is'stamped from the band and is adaptedto'be projected through the front button holes of any ordinary collar and secure the collar to 4 the collar band. Atthe rear of the collar,
band, a similar tongue 10 is formed by lar band or in other words in the collar band which when forced outwardly will provide a tongue similar to the tongue 8, and this tongue 10 is designed to be projected through the rear button hole of an ordinary collar.
By constructing t collar band of several thicknesses of material, the tongues 8 and 10 may be given the desired rigidity to; operate as effective attaching means, and mav be manipulated by the fingers to fasten and onfasten as desired.
While I have described my invention in connection with a collar band I would have it understood that it is capable of other uses, and I do not limitmyself to the particular use nor to the details of construction set forth, butconsider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my inventiongvhat I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isg, V
A collar band of the character described,
comprising two pieces,.. each piece folded longitudinally and having its edges bent inwardly with lines of stitching eXiendin through the eight thiclmesses oi? materia thus formed at the outer edge of the band, said pieces at their folded edges adapted to be secured to the inner and outer faces of a shirt atthe neck, said collar hand at one end having a tongue projecting beyond the edge of the shirt and at its other end having an opening to receive the tongue, and said 601- In testimony whereof I have signed my iar band ad acent the first-mentioned ton ue name to this s C(JlfiCiltlUIl 1n the resence of and midway between the ends of the band two subscriblngwitnesses.
having integral tongues cut from the band JOSEPH J. BJODEK. between its uppenand lower edges, and bent \Vitnesses: outwardly frum'the band for attachment to (IR. ZIEGLER,
n, 0011211, substantially as described. i I S. \V. FOSTER.
