LEAF 0R SHEET FOR TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 112, I916.
Application filed. December 20, 1915. Serial No. 67,869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHOLD KRUM- MING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaves or Sheets for Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leaves or sheets for temporary binders.
My improved leaves or sheets are especially designed by me for use in albums, although desirable for use in various relations.
The main objects of my invention are: First, to provide an improved leaf or sheet of the class described having a reinforced binding margin. Second, to provide an improved leaf of the class described having a thickened binding margin. Third, to provide an improved leaf of the class described having these advantages which is very simple and economical to produce.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification in which:
Figure I is a plan view of my improved sheet or leaf. Fig. II is a plan view of the blank from which the same is formed, showing steps in its manufacture. Fig. III is an enlarged detail longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. I. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 44 of Fig. I. Fig. V is an enlarged detail transverse section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. I.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the' little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, my improved sheet 1 is formed from a blank, as shown in Fig. II, with alined oppositely disposed transverse slits 2 extending from its edges and longitudinal slits 3 extending forwardly from the transverse slits. The part of the sheet at the rear of th transverse slits constitutes a binding reinforcing flap 4:. I preferably form a line. of perforations 5 between the slits 2 to facilitate folding of the binding flap. The binding flap is folded along the line of the slits 2 and inserted through the longitudinal slits 3. The portions 6 at the outside of the longitudinal slits 3 constitute flap retaining members. With the flap thus folded and engaged with the retaining members it is securely retained in its folded position. The flap and its retaining members are provided with registering perforations 7 adapted to re ceive binding members, such as the posts, of a temporary binder. I also preferably score the sheet at 8, the scoring being adjacent to but spaced from the inner edge of the binding flap so as to provide a hinge or flexing line for the leaf. The slitting, scoring, perforating and punching can be practically performed at a single operation so that it is only necessary tofold the flap and engage it in the slits or under the retaining members to complete the sheet, and this may be done very rapidly and easily. By this arrangement I secure a reinforced and also a thickened binding margin for the sheet and at nominal cost. The sheet is also neat and attractive in appearance.
Although the form and location of the flap retaining members may be considerably varied without departing from my invention, I have not attempted to illustrate or describe such variations or modifications as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody my improvements as conditions may require or taste dictate. I desire, however, to be understood as claiming my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A leaf having alined opposed transverse slits extending from its edges and longitudinal slits extending forwardly from such transverse slits, said sheet being folded on the line of said transverse slits, the folded portion constituting a binding member flap, the portions at the outside of said longitudinal slits constituting flap retaining members, said flap being disposed through said longitudinal 'slits, the sheet be ing provided With perforations through said flap and parts overlapping therewith and being transversely scoredadjacent the inner edge of said flap to facilitate flexing.
2. A leaf having alined opposed transverse slits extendlng from its edges and longitudinal slits extending forwardly A from such transverse slits, said sheet being folded on the line of said transverse slits, the fold- ,edportion constituting a binding flap and being disposed through said longitudinal slits, there being a line of perforations besuch transverse slits, said sheet being folded on the line of said transverse slits and the ends ofthe folded portion being disposed through said longitudinal slits.
4. A leaf having a flap portion at its binding edge folded back upon the leaf body, there being transverse slits extending from each edge, and longitudinal slits extending forwardly :from such transverse slits, the parts on the outside of said longitudinal slits constituting flap retaining members, said flap retaining members being arranged over said flap, there being registering binding member perforations through said flap retaining members and flap, said sheet being scored transversely adjacent the inner edge of said flap to provide a point of fiexure.
5. A leaf having a flap portion at its binding edge folded back upon the leaf body, there being transverse slits extending from each edge, and longitudinal slits extending forwardly from such transverse slits, the parts on the outside of said longitudinal slits constituting flap retaining members, said flap retaining members being arranged over said flap, there being registering binding member perforations through said flap retaining members and flap.
6. A leaf having a flap portion at its binding edge folded back upon the leaf body, the leaf body being longitudinally and transversely slitted to provide a flap retaining member, such retaining member being engaged over the flap, there being registering binding member perforations through said flap and retaining member.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two \vitnesses.
REINHOLD KRUMMING.
