Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. MOSELEY, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,765, dated November'7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MosELY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful manut'actnre ot' a peculiar surface-sized paper for the manufacture of turn'dowu or folded paper-collars; and I do hereby declare that the tbllowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Since the introduction of turn-down enameled paper-collars numerous and frequent causes of complaint have arisen from the enameled or painted surface being affected by the perspiration, causing the enamel to stick to the neck to the great annoyance of the wearer, and the consequent bad effect upon the health from the poisonous pigments frequently employed in the enamcling composition. To overcome these objections is the object I have had in view in pursuing my experiments; and after many and repeated trials I have succeeded in producing a superior surface-sized paper which can be made into a folded or turn-down collar that can be worn upon the neck without injury to the wearer, owing to the harmless-character of the ing'edicuts used in the sizing; and the sizing protects the surface of the paper from being roughened by use, and imparts asoft delicate laumh-y-flnished appearance to the surface of the collar, totally unlike the hard painted character of the enameled collars now in market.
I will now proceed to describe my invention, so as to enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
I take one. pound of glue, using by preference the finer grades known as gelatin, which I soak in two gallons of water and dissolve it by the aid of heat; I then take four pounds of the purest and whitest starch and thoroughly incorporate it with four gallons of hot water, to which I then add the solution of glue and a sufliciency of any suitable blue to give the desired shade of color, and then mix .the whole thoroughly together. The proportions of the sizing mixture may be varied so as to makcit thicker or more dilute, as may be required forthe various qualities ot'pnpcr to which it is to be appliet Having thus prepared the sizing mixture I then sclcct a pure and good quality of collar-paper and apply the sizing smoothly and uniformly to the surtluccol' the paper by use of brushes or by other suitable means;
and after the sizing is dried 1 then brush some powdered talc upon he dry sized surface of the paper, and submit the surface so prepared to the action of a powerful rotary brush, which removes all of the tale and imparts a soft. agreeable feeling to the sized surface. 1 then cut collars of any desired form from the sized paper and told them in shape as required to suitthe taste 'or fashion. My improved sized collars may be cmbossed or painted with any suitable ornamentation, or in imitation of various fabrics.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desir to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The process herein described for finishing paper, the same consisting in the application of a surface size of glue and starch, then covering with talc or its equivalent and afterward brushing the surface, all substantially as set forth.
, 2. The improved surface-sized collar-paper herein described, either in the form of sheets or made into collars, as set forth, the same being a new article of manufacture;
WILLIAM F. MOSELEY.
