DISPLAY-CASE.
Application filed April 10, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. Norms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the display of goods in their original containers, wherein the containers have a hinged lid or cover, as cigar boxes, and one of the main objects is to provide means for protecting the goods from dirt, dust, etc., by means of a supplemental, transparent, cover with the lid of the container in open position whereby the goods are exposed to View, but in a thoroughly sanitary manner.
A further object is to provide means for detachably connecting the same with the container lid, whereby said supplemental cover may be used repeatedly upon new containers as old ones are emptied,
A further object is to so construct the device as to be movable with the container lid in order to raise the supplemental cover to give access to the goods in the container.
A further object is to provide such a device which is composed of a plate of clear glass and a frame therefor so located as to protect the glass but not interfere with the view of the goods.
A further object is to provide means for quickly and easily joining the glass and its frame in a detachable manner, whereby a new plate of glass may be substituted for one broken.
A further Object is to form the frame.
from a length of wire in such manner as to also form the lid engaging means.
A further object is to so locate the frame, with respect to the container, as to bind upon the inner sides or ends thereof, and thus render the container dust proof.
A further object is to provide a panel for the said device which is adapted to receive and display certain printed matter relating to the goods displayed; and further objects are to provide such devices which are simple in construction, highly eflicient in use, very attractive in themselves in order to attract attention to the goods, and which are comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Serial No. 20,418.
the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container provided with my invention in operative position; Fig. 2 is a detached view of the wire frame of my invention; Fig. 3 is a detached view of a corner clip which Iuse; Fig. A is a fragmentary section taken on the line 4.% of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of a portion of a modification of the form shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 7 is a section, fragmentary, taken through a box provided with the form shown in Fig. 6, similar to Fig. 5 on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, I have illustrated one form of the invention, in connection with the box 8 having a hinged lid 9, such as a cigar box, and which lid is adapted to enter between the box ends and bear upon the top of the front of the box, in the form shown.
My invention, primarily, consists of a plate of very clear glass 10 of such dimensions as to rest upon the open top of the box and be flush with the outer surfaces of the box front and ends, when the rear thereof rests against the raised lid 9, and this rear edge of the glass plate is provided with a channeled metal guard 11 to which is soldered, adjacent the ends thereof, a wire, yokeshaped, frame 12 closely following the line of the edges of the glass plate, and arranged under said plate, and the ends of said frame are each bent inwardly beneath the guard 11, then upwardly, then outwardly and again inwardly to form a loop 13 of a transverse diameter permitting the entry of the box lid, said ends then being bent clownwardly to prevent pivotal movement of said glass plate with respect to the lid.
The frame 12 is connected with the glass plate 10 at its forward corners by means of clips 14:, each of which comprises, as shown in Fig. 3, two gutter- shaped members 15 and 16 perpendicular to each other to form a right angle, and a ribbon like extension 17 on each of the said members, the wire of the frame being placed within the gutters of the members 15 and 16, after which the edges of said members are forced inwardly to imprison the frame, the extensions 17 then being bent upwardly and inwardly around the corresponding edges of the glass plate to bind said frame and plate together, there being no need for solder to connect said clips and frame.
Soldered,'or otherwise connected, to the guard 11is a panel 18, also preferably of glass inclosed in a metal frame, thus fornr ing a glass front case which is adapted to receive and display certain printed matter relating to the goods displayed, and it will be noted that the lid gripping loops 13, and the panel 18, are inclined from a perpendicular erected on the plane of the glass plate 10, thus permitting the box lid 9 to rest at an angle to the box to enable a person to read the matter usually carried on the inner surbox lid, the glass plate resumes its normal position through gravity.
The form illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 is similar in all respects to the form described, with the exception that the ends of the yokeshaped frame 12 are terminated beneath the guard 11, and substantially vertical, channeled, metal, guides 19 are provided to replace the wire loops 13, being soldered to the panel 18, and this form differs also in the fact that the glass plate 10 is made of a length approximating the distance between I the inner sides of the box ends, whereby said plate rests upon the top edge of the box front, and against the inner surfaces of the box ends, exactly like the box lid when closed, thus making the device flush with the box top instead of resting thereupon,
I but the essentials of glass plate, metal frame,
guard, panel, and vertical guides for the box 11d, are allke in function in each form.
It will thus be seen that I provide a supplemental, transparent, cover for an open container, which may be opened in turn to allow removal of the contents of the box,
which carries printed matter relating to the goods, and which may be used repeatedly upon different boxes, it being understood that the said devices will be made to fit conventional or special containers.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a container having a hinged lid; of a transparent cover for said container, a frame beneath said cover, corner clips for holding cover and frame together, and means for engagement with the edges of said lid whereby said lid is held in desired raised position, and lid and cover move simultaneously.
2. The combination with a container having a hinged lid; of a transparent cover for said container, a frame beneath said cover and composed of a yoke-shaped wire length, the ends of which are bent to form lid engaging means, and corner clips for holding said frame and cover together.
3. The combination with a container having a hinged lid; of a transparent cover for said container, a frame beneath said cover and composed of a yoke-shaped length of wire, means for detachably holding said frame to said lid and thus hold said lid in raised position, and corner clips comprising,
each, two gutter-shaped members at a right angle to each other adapted to receive and hold said frame, and an extension on each member bent upwardly around said cover.
4. The combination with a container having a hinged lid; of a cover formed of transparent material, a guard at the rear edge thereof, a yoke-shaped frame beneath the same and secured to said guard, corner clips for holding said cover and frame together, and means for clamping said cover and lid together to hold said lid in raised position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
