Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT EEIGE.
GEORGE HAYDEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM C.
' GRISWOLD, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE BANDING-RINGS FDR HAT-BLOCKING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,740, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAYDEN, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New lJersey, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Banding- Ring for Blocking or Shaping-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an expanding banding-ring adjustable to the various sizes of hats. It consists in an adjustable ring expanded and contracted by slides, said slides being operated by a combination of levers.
The following is a description of the accompanying drawing which illustrates the improvement. h his the clamp which holds the hat-body rmly to the lower plate of the machine. a a is theadjustable banding-ring made in two parts, one of which overlaps the other, each part being furnished with slots and rivets for the purpose of admitting of expanding and contracting to suit the various sizes of hats, and at the same time holding the two parts iirmly together. b b are the compressing-slides connected to the ring by arms sliding in suitable ways or slots in or attached to the clampingplate h. They are operated by fulcrum-levers d d, which are connected at one end to rods e e, and at their centers with the compressing slides bb, and held to their place by sliding slots g g, adjustable in the bar j', which bar is ixed to the clampingplate h.
The mode of operating the banding-ring a a is by compressing one end of the fulcrum-levers d d, which in turn compress the slides b b, and contracts the banding ring a a to the required size of the hat to be blocked, in which position it is held by the stops g g. The great advantage the adjustable expanding banding-rin g has over any other in use is, th at but one ring is required to band all sizes of hats, the ring being a part of the machine, and readily adjustable to any required hat size. The solid ring of ordinary machines requires to be detached bodily. In blocking bell-crowned hats the expanding-ring will admit of the ready introduction of that shape of block in its expanded form, and obviate the necessity of expanding it after itsintroduction into the body.
I claim as my inventionv The adjustable expanding banding-ring, operated by slides and levers, substantially as set forth and for the purpose herein specified.
GEORGE HAYDEN.
