To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ADOLF PILGER, citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marshwood, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Novelty-Cases Adapted to Contain and Dispense Matches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in novelty cases adapted to contain and dispense matches in particular, audibly announcing the discharge of each match.

Such an object is attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container made in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken in another plane of the container. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a further sectional view taken on line 66 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the container, showing the bottom closed, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the same showing the bottom partially open.

The container as shown consists of a rectangular casing, the main side walls 10 of which are united by the end plates 11 and a permanent bottom 12 through the corner of which is an opening 15, the bottom being extended downward along its major edges and turned in, as at 16, forming a guideway for a sliding plate 18, provided with a center depending lug or handle 20 by which it may be readily operated.

At one corner 'of the sliding plate 18 is a depressed portion 21 adapted, when the cover plate is in normal position, to register with the opening 15 through which the match ex tends prior to delivery by actuating the plate 18. A lid 25 having flanges 26 extending around it and being of such shape and size as to engage with the top of the con tainer, is hinged at 28 to one of the sides 11 as shown. A spring 29 is secured within the box in such manner as to hold the cover normally closed.

A top plate 31 and a cross partition 32 are rigidly set in the smaller compartment of the container and depending from the latter is a rigid metal reed 33, the same being vibrant when con tact is made with it by the pin 35, rigidly secured in the sliding plate 18, whereby an audible signal is given of considerable intensity, the compartment above the partition 32 acting as a sound box.

When the sliding plate 18 is actuated it causes the rod 38 to move upon the hinge 28 by reason of its extreme end engaging in the opening 27 formed in the sliding plate, while at the same time an arm 39 of the rod 38, provided with a depending lug 12, is adapted to make contact with the end of a match, positively forcing it outward through the opening 15 so that it can be grasped by the operator.

In order to provide against a match dropping inadvertently, or before it is desired, a plunger 40 is pressed normally against the match about to be dispensed by means of the coil spring 1-1 which aifords suflicient tension, to prevent the match or other article from dropping of its own weight. It is intended that the matches shall be disposed within the container in such manner that the heads are uppermost and provision for igniting them is made by corrugating or roughening the surface 30, so that as the match stick is grasped by the fingers of the operator in pulling it outwardly, the head may be made to strike against the surface and drawn out in readiness for immediate use. Thus it will be seen that provisions are made for maintaining a desirable number of matches in a suitable container, that the matches may be delivered individually one at a time, that the delivery will be accompanied by an audible musical note, clear and distinct, and that the match may be ignited immediately prior to its release.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

crumed on the hinge of said cover, said lever having an arm engaged in said slide and operable thereby, and a second arm formed with said lever adapted to forcev a single match through the mentioned opening when said slide is actuated.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a rectangular box having two vertical comparements, one adapted to contain matches, means for discharging a single match through the bottom of the box, a cover plate slidably engaged with the bottom, means for actuating said cover plate, means for preventing the discharge by gravity of a match from said box, and an audible signal means in the other of said compartments adapted to be actuated by operation of said sliding cover plate. In a device of the class described, the combination With a rectangular receptacle having a division plate vertically arranged therein forming two compartments of different areas, a sound-box in the lesser compartment formed by said division plate, a musical reed engaged with said sound box, a bottom having a corner opening coinmunicating with the larger compartment in said box, a slide operable over said bottom having a depressed portion registrable with the mentioned opening, means combined with said slide for forcing a match through the opening coincidentally with actuating said reed, and means for frictionally retard 7 ing a match as it is expelled. .7

In a device of the class described, the combination with a rectangular receptacle having an opening in its bottom, a cover slidable over said bottom, said cover having a depressed surface registrable with the mentioned opening, a sound-box formed in said receptacle, a musical reed rigidly engaged with said sound-box, and means combined with said sliding cover whereby said reed is set in vibration upon actuation of said cover.

5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a rectangular, box having two vertical compartments, one adaptedto contain matches, means for discharging a single match through the bottom of the box, a cover plate slidably engaged with the bottom, means for actuating said cover plate, means for preventing the discharge by gravity of a matchfrom said box, means for igniting a match immediately prior to its full release,- and means for audibly announcing the operation of said cover plate.
