To all whom it may conccrn Be it known that I, ALBERT A. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of East Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks, and more particularly to those of the type wherein a latch bolt is retractable by a key from the outside of the room, and by outside and inside knobs, or other manually operable retracting devices, there being suitable stop work or night latch mechanism to dog the outside manual retracting device. Certain features of the construction are particularly applicable to a lock having a guarded latch bolt, 2'. 6., one which is automatically deadlocked by the closing of the door.
One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a lock in which manually operable night latch slides, accessible in the usual way, at the face or front of the lock case, may only be actuated through the use of a key employed in connection with the lock, and more particularly the key for retracting the latch bolt. This is a valuable feature in looks used on the doors of oflice buildings, apartment houses, and the like, where it is desirable to guard against the manipulation of the stop work, by unauthorized persons, when the door is either open or closed.
In another aspect, the invention has for its object the provision of a lock in which stop work or night latch mechanism, of any appropriate type, may be actuated only when the latch bolt is retracted by the key, the retraction of such bolt by the knob mechanism having no eflect whatever in altering the normally dogged or blocked condition of the stop work. This is another important feature in providing against the unauthorized manipulation of the stop work under any and all conditions. It is not essential, however, in all aspects of the invention that the release of the stop work be confined to the key mechanism.
Other objects of the invention are to provide stop work or night latch mechanism which is very readily reversible to change the hand of the lock; to improve the mechanism for guarding the latch bolt, especially where the lock is to be of rather massive Specification of Letters Patent.

construction; and to improve the general construction and operation of devices of the class to which my invention relates.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the lock case 10, of usual type, is equipped with a latch bolt 11, of ordinary form, having shank or stem 12, crosshead 18, and spring 1 1. This bolt is adapted to be withdrawn from the outside of the door by key mechanism, which may comprise an ordinary cylinder lock 15, having the customary bit or dog 16, which is adapted to operate a retracting lever 17. The lever 17 is pivoted on a post 18, and is provided with a downwardly extending arm 19 to engage the front face of the crosshead 13. Another arm 20 on the lever 17 engages a lever 21 that is pix oted in the case at 22, and normally held by a spring 23 in the, position shown in Fig. 1. The free end of the lever 21 is provided with a projection 2-1, adapted to be engaged by the bit or dog 16 of the cylinder lock, and as said lever is pushed downward by said bit or dog, it will engage the arm 20 of lever 17, and thereby actuate said lever to retract the latch bolt in an obvious manner.
The latch bolt may be retracted inclependently by hand, from opposite sides of the door, by means of inside and outside hubs 25 and 26 respectively, adapted to be actuated in the usual way by inside and outside knobs (not shown). The hubs 25, 26 are adapted to act on a sliding yoke or knob shoe 27, acted on by a spring 28. At its upper edge, the yoke or shoe is provided with a lug 29 adapted to contact with a pin or projection 30 on the lever 17, so that as the yoke is actuated it will operate the lever 17 to retract the bolt. In the form shown, the stop work or night latch mechanism includes a dogging slide 31, accessible at the face or front of the case, and adapted to engage a notch in the outside hub 26. The dogging slide 3.1 may be released from its dogging position by means of a releasing slide 32, likewise accessible at the face of the case, and connected with the slide 31 by a removable pivoted lever or walking beam 33. r
The mechanism for automatically deadlocking the latch bolt on the closing of the door is constructed substantially as follows: A lever 34, pivoted on a post 35, below the latch bolt, is adapted to extend back of the latch bolt head and block the incursion of the bolt, and a spring 36, acting :on an .upwardly directed arm 37 of said lever, tends to hold the deadlocking lever in this position. A controller bolt 38 is normally projected out of the face plate by a spring 39. The controller bolt has a shank 40, and the spring 39 preferably embraces this shank in the manner shown. The shank 40 carries a crosshead 41, held by the spring 39, in engagement with the upper end of arm 37 of the deadlocking lever. The spring 39 is considerably stronger than the spring 36, and the controller bolt 38 will normally push on the arm 37 suiliciently by means of the crosshead 41) to hold the deadlocking end of lever 34 down below the path of the latch bolt head. WVhen, however, the door is closed, the controller bolt will be forced in and held in by the strike, which will permit the spring 36 to swing the deadlocking lever up into position back of the latch bolt head. The lever 34 is provided with a tail portion 42, having a shoulder 43, adapted to contact with the pin 30 on lever 17 In withdrawing the bolt by actuation of the key mechanism, or of the knobs, the pin 30 will strike the shoulder 43 and tilt the deadlocking lever out of its operative position to permit the incursion of the bolt.
The control of the stop work or night latch mechanism by the key mechanism alone in the manner previously suggested may be accomplished as follows: Connected with the lever 21, by a pin 44 (Fig. 3) is a slide 45, having at its lower end portion a projection 46, adapted to cooperate with a pin 47, extending back from the rear face of the releasing slide 32. At one side of the projection 46 is a notch 48. When the releasing slide 32 is protracted, and the dog ging slide 31 is engaged with the outside hub 26, the pin 47 is tightly held in the notch 48 by the spring 23 of lever 21. Hence, it will be impossible to actuate the night latch mechanism from the face of the lock, the slide 45 being firmly held against lateral movement by suitable guides on the wall of the case. In order to release the night latch mechanism, the slide 45 must be pushed downward so that the pin 47 will clear the projection 46, as shown in Fig. 4, and this can only be accomplished by means of the key for the cylinder lock 15, which key in withdrawing the bolt by means of the dog or bit 16, and retracting lever 17 must necessarily depress the lever 21 in the manner above explained. When the slide 45 is pushed downward by the retraction of the latch bolt, the night latch mechanismwill be released for manual operation, but when the latch bolt is retracted manually, such mechanism will not be released, inasmuch as the lever 21 will not be actuated.
When the releasing slide 32 has been pushed inward to move the slide 31 out of engagement with the outside hub, the night latch mechanism will be locked in this released position relatively to the outside hub, as the bit 16 is actuated to release the latch bolt. In this position, the pinv 47 of the slide 32 will be engaged by the opposite edge of the projection 46, so that it will be impossible to move the releasing slide 32 outwardly, wherefore it will be impossible to move the slide 31 inwardly owing to the lever connection v33. Hence, it will be understood that my invention provides .means releasable only by a key for locking the stop work or night latch mechanism in either its dogging position relative to the outside manually operable latch retracting device, or in its released position relative to such device. The details of the mechanism are susceptible of considerable modification without departing from this generic principle.
In order to make the lock reversible the cap and back plate of the case are provided with registering openings for the cylinder lock, and the controller bolt, latch bolt and night latch mechanism are reversible. The night latch mechanism is reversible by interchanging the slides 31 and 32. As will be noted, from Figs. 5 and 7 both the inside and outside hubs are provided with notches, and the dogging end 31 of the slide 31 is adapted in the position of Fig. 5 to engage only the notch of the outside hub 26. The end 32 of the slide 32, however, is oflset relatively to the end 31, as shown in Fig. 7. By removing the lever 33 and interchanging slides 31 and 32 (Fig. 6), the slide 32 may be used as a dogging slide for the hub 25, which will then become the outer hub, and the slide 31 will then become the releasing slide. By this construction, both hubs or the lock may be made of the same shape without complicating materially the shape of the night latch slides, as compared with those formerly used. It is merely necessary to provide a releasing slide of ordinary type, with an inner end portion adapted to dog the hub Which is not dogged by the regular dogging slide. These slides then become 1nterchangeable in the manner stated. In order to provide for the locking of the stop Work or night latch mechanism, when the lock is adjusted to either hand, both of the night latch slides 31 and 32 are provided with projecting pins 47, or the like, to cooperate with the slide45, or its equivalent.
The foregoing description is necessarily a detailed one, in so far as it concerns the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description, and I have not attempted to illustrate and describe the numerous modifications of the lock structure which may be adopted within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a lock, a latch bolt, inner and outer manual retracting devices therefor, manually operable stop work or night latch mechanism associated with the outer retracting device, key mechanism for retracting said bolt, and means to lock said stop Work or night latch mechanism against manual operation releasable only when said key mechanism is operated to retract said latch bolt; substantially as described.
2. In a lock, a latch bolt, inner and outer manual retracting devices therefor, stop work for dogging the outer retracting device, key mechanism for retracting the latch bolt, means normally locking said stop work against movement, and means to release said stop Work when the latch bolt is withdrawn by the key; substantially as described.
3. In a lock, a latch bolt, means including a hub for retracting said bolt manually from the outside of the door, key-actuated mechanism for retracting said bolt, manual retracting mechanism for retracting said bolt from the inside of the door, means for dogging and releasing said hub, means for deadlocking said dogging and releasing means, and means for preventing the release of said deadlocking means and means to release said preventing means when one only of said retracting mechanisms is operated to retract said latch bolt; substantially as described.
4. In a look, a latch bolt, key actuated retracting mechanism therefor, manually operable inner and outer retracting devices for said latch bolt, means to dog the outer manually operable retracting device, means for deadlocking said dogging means, and locking means for preventing the release of said deadlocking means, said locking means being so constructed and arranged that it is released only during the time that the latch bolt is retracted by said key mechanism; substantially as described.
5. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, manual retracting mechanism therefor, including inner and outer hubs, stop work for dogging the outer hub, said latch bolt and said stop work being reversible to adjust the lock to either hand, key-actuated mechanism for retracting said bolt, and means for preventing release of the stop work when the lock is adjusted to either hand, and means for releasing said preventing means when one of said retracting mechanisms is actuated; substantially as described.
6. A lock having reversible stop work, and means for deadlocking the same in either adjustment; substantially as described.
7. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, a retracting yoke or shoe, inner and outer hubs to actuate said yoke or shoe, stop work for dogging the outer hub, said latch bolt and said stop work being reversible to change the hand of the lock, and means for dogging said stop work when adjusted to either hand; substantially as described.
8. A lock having reversible stop work or night latch mechanism, and key actuated means for deadlocking the same in either adjustment; substantially as described.
9. In a look, a latch bolt, means for retracting the same, including inner and outer hubs, stop work for dogging and releasing the outer hub, including dogging and releasing slides, said latch bolt being reversible, and said slides being interchangeable to adjust the lock to either hand, and means for dogging the stop work against movement when the lock is adjusted to either hand; substantially as described.
10. In a look, a latch bolt, manual retracting means therefor, reversible stop work associated with said retracting means, key mechanism for retracting said bolt, means to look said stop work against manual operation when in the normal or in the reversed position, and key mechanism for releasing said stop work from said locking means; substantially as described.
11. In a lock, a case having a face plate, a latch bolt in said case, inner and outer manually operable retracting devices for said latch bolt, stop work projecting through the face plate of the case and adapted to dog and release the outer retracting device, means normally locking said stop Work in either its dogging position or in its released position, and means operable from the side of the door only for releasing said stop Work and permitting manual operation thereof; substantially as described.
12. In a lock, night latch mechanism, including interchangeable members, each adapted to act as a dogging member or as a releasing member; substantially as described.
13. In a lock, night latch mechanism, in cluding interchangeable slides having offset hub dogging portions; substantially as described.
14. In a lock, night latch mechanism, including interchangeable slides, and a Walking beam, said slides being ofiset from each other to engage different hubs; substantially as described.
15. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, two hubs to operate the same, and night latch mechanism, including members interchangeable to dog either hub; substantially as described;
16. In a lock, a latch bolt, inner and outer hubs, to retract the same, each of said hubs having a notch, and night latch mechanism, including slides to engage the respective notches, said slides being interchangeable so that either may act as a dogging" slide or as a releasing slide; substantially as described.
17. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, inner and outer hubs to retract the same, a doggingmember tor one of said hubs, and a releasing member for said dog- Copies of this patent may be obtained for gins; member, adapted to be interchanged with said dogging member, and to dog the other hub; substantially as described.
18. In a. lock, the combination of a latch bolt, inner and outer hubs to retract the same, each of said hubs having a notch, a dogging slide to dog one of said hubs, a releasing slide to mOVe said dogging slide out of dogging position, and a removable Walking' beam to connect said slides, said releasing slide being interchangeable With said dogging slide, and formed to dog the other hub, and said doggingslide being interchangeable With said releasing slide and adapted to act as a releasing slide; substantially as described.
19. In a lock, night latch mechanism, comprising interchangeable dogging" members, each adapted to act as a releasing; member; substantially as described.
