Description

No. 120,604. ADDLPH vvxEaER- Patented Nov. 7, l1871.
NVENT BB UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH WIBBEBT, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS AND TABLES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,604, dated November 7, 1871.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH WIBBERT, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain 11nprovements in Desks and Tables, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a desk and table so constructed that it can be converted into either a standing or a sitting desk, or, if desired, can beA used as a table only, and is arranged with supports, slides, and weights in proper position when used as a table, or standing or sitting desk.
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention when used as a table, and showing the different parts in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a perspective view when converted into a sitting desk; and Fig. 3, a perspective View when converted into a standing desk.
A are the girts, which, with legs K, make the frame of my invention, B, top,.hinged on slidegirt Q; C, the slides working in front legs K, and which are used to elevate or lower top B, and by which the front of top B is supported. D are side supports, for the purpose of supporting top B in a slightly inclined position when used as a sitting desk, and they, being hinged to side girts A, are folded inward when not in use. E, back support for holding up the back of top B in an inclined position when used as a standing desk. This support E is thrown up into its proper position when desired to be used as a standing desk by spring E, and is hinged onto back girt A, and when not used for thispurpose it is folded down the same as side supports D, and fitting .with them exactly between girts A. Gr, movable edge on'top B, for the purpose of preventing articles from sliding oi'f of same when used as a desk, and which can, by means of pins and slots H, be lowered so as lto leave the top smooth when used as a table. I, spring-stops on front legs K, for the purpose of holding the top at the height desired when used as a standingdesk; these stops I catch in holes in slides C. K are the legs to the table or desk, the rear ones being hollow so as to allow a cord and weight to work up or down in the same, the front ones being dovetailed for slides C to work in. L, cord, at one end attached to slides C, and the other to a weight, M, for the purpose of balancing the top B, so as to require but a slight effort to raise or lower it. This cord L lies in a groove in top of side girts A, one end running over a pulley, N', down in a slot in front legs, and is fastened to slides G, the other end passing over pulley N, down in rear legs, and attached to weights M. O, inkstand, arranged with hinges on the back side and a rest on the front, so as to be level when the apparatus is used as a desk. I?, cover to inkstand; when this cover is closed it leaves a smooth surface to the top when used for a table. Q, girt securing slides C together at the top, and to which the top B is hinged.
The operation of this device is simple. For a table the supports D and E are folded down under top B, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. When a sitting desk is desired, lift up top B and fold outside supports D, and let the top rest on them, and also press up movable edge G to prevent things 'om slipping oi'; and when a standing desk is desired, lift up top B enough to allow spring F to throw the back support E to its proper position, allowing the back side of top B to rest thereon, then take hold of handles on girt Q and lift up; this brings the top to the proper position. This is done with but a slight eiiort, as the weight M balances the upper part. The top is held in its place by the spring-stops I catching into holes in slides C. To return to a table pull out stops I, fold down support E, and press the top B down, and it will remain so and form a table.
I claim as my inventionl. Girts A and legs K, top B, slides C, support E, spring F, and movable edge G, substantially as described.
2. Girts A, top B, slides C, in combination with cord L, and weight M, and stops I, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. Top B, slides G, supports D, held in position by girts A and legs K, substantially as described.
4. Top B, inkstand O, and cover P, substantially as described.
Witnesses: ADOLPH WIBBERT.
