MAHLON WARNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLYANIA.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 120,471, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it -known that I, MAHLON WARNE, of Philadelphia, inthe county oi Philadelphia and State of Penn sylvania, have invented an Improved Support and Advertising Medium for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a sliieciiication My invention has for its object to furnish an improved form of hand-support for passengers compelled to stand in city or other railway-cars, and hence designed to take the place of the straps or loops commonly used for that purpose. The invention consists in the combination of a hollour circular frame, endless band or cord, and sliding handle, said frame being also constructed with a view to securing certain advertising mediums therein, as hereinafter described.
, In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a face view of my improved support; Figs. 2 and 3, views of the interior construction of the circular frame. Fig. 4 represents the form of glass employed in the frame.
A indicates the circular frame, which is composed of two similarly-constructed parts, each provided with a groove, J, so that, when put togther, they form a hollow ring for the reception ofthe endless cord E, on which is placed the round wooden. bar or handle F. The cord is tightly clamped between the circular sections by means of screws at G, but the handle slides freely thereon. The circular sections are cut out at K to accommodate the cord, and are united by screws passing through the ears B B, which are cast in one piece with them (the sections.) The upper ear is slotted to admit of the attachment of a strap, whereby the device is secured to the roof-rails of a car. Each of the sections of the frame is cast with an inner ilange or rabbeted edge, H, whereby, when put, together, a recess or annular groove is formed, suitable for the reception of circular plates D of glass. Between these plates I design to place advertising-cards, prints, or pictures. Thus, the prints while protected by will be legible through the glass, and similar or different advertisements may be placed in the same frame, which, from the position of the frame in the car, it is manifest cannot ail of quickly attracting the notice of passengers. v
In this manner I provide a support free from a tendency or liability to eramp the hand of the person grasping it, adapted to conceal the june tion of the ends of the cord, as Well as tightly clamp the same, and also a device calculated to adorn the car in which it is suspended, while incidentally constituting a most efiicient means of displaying advertisements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved han dsupp ort for passen ger-cars, formed of the hollow circular frame A, composed of grooved sections, as specified, the endless cord E, and sliding handle F, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
