APPLICATION FILED SEPT-28,1915.

A TTOR/VEYJ' tJNrr s r VICTOR ALVER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KNIFE.
menses.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application filed September 28, 1915. Serial No. 53,077.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VICTOR ALVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of'Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knives and other tools having a hollow handle into which the blade may be wholly or partly retracted when not in use.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient tool of the kind stated, having novel and improved means for holding the blade in advanced and retracted position.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the tool, with the blade retracted; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tool with the blade advanced.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the handle of the tool is a sheath 5 of suitable length having on one side a longitudinal slot 6. In the sheath is slidably mounted the tool blade, the drawing showing a knife blade 7. It will be understood, of course, that the invention is not limited to a knife, but that any other tool or blade may be associated with the sheath 5. The length of the sheath is such that the blade 7 may be retracted and entirely housed therein.
To the slotted side of the sheath 5 is pivoted, at 8, alocking device for the blade 7, said device comprising a flat plate 9 corre spending in length and width to the length and width of the sheath. In one of the longitudinal edges of the plate9 are notches 10 having a sufficient depth to intersect the slot 6. To the butt end of the blade is fixed a stud 11 having a head 12. The stud 11 extends from one side of the blade 7 and passes through the slot 6, and it also projects far enough through the slot to enter one of the notches 10, the head 12 of the stud engaging the outer face of the plate 9.
The sheath 5 is open at both ends, and the blade 7 is adapted to be projected from the front end into working position as shown in Fig. 3. The blade may also be entirely withdrawn from the sheath at the butt end thereof, the slot 6 opening through this end of the sheath.
The plate 9 is pivoted to the sheath 5 at the forward end thereof, and at its free end it has a lateral flange 13 extending across the butt end of the sheath when the plate is in looking position.
To project the blade 7 into working position, the plate 9 is swung outward from the sheath 5 until the notch 10 in which the stud 11 seats is clear of said notch. The blade is now free and may be advanced to project the desired distance from the front end of the sheath, the head 12 of the stud providing a convenient means for advancing the blade. After the blade has been advanced the desired distance, the plate 9 is swung back to overlap the slotted side of the sheath and to bring the stud 11 into one of the notches 10, whereupon the blade is securely locked in working position. When the tool is not in use, the blade may be slid back into the sheath as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and locked therein by the plate 9.
I claim:
1. The combination of a tool handle comprising an open ended sheath having a longitudinal side slot, a tool slidably mounted in the sheath and adapted to be projected from the open end thereof, said tool having a side stud passing through the slot of the sheath and projecting therefrom, and a swinging member carried by the slotted side of the sheath and having edge notches intersecting the slot of the sheath to receive the projecting end of the stud.
2. The combination of a tool handle comprising a sheath open at both ends and having a longitudinal slot opening through its butt end, a tool slidably mounted in the sheath, said tool having a side stud passing through the slot of the sheath and projecting therefrom, and a swinging member carried by the slotted side of the sheath and having edge notches to receive the projecting end of the stud.
3. The combination of a tool handle comprising a sheath open at both ends and having a longitudinal slot opening through its butt end, a tool slidably mounted in the sheath, said tool having a side stud passing through the slot of the sheath and projecting therefrom, and a swinging member carried by the slotted side of the sheath and having edge notches to receive the projecting end of the stud, said member having a lateral flange at its free end extending across the butt end of the sheath When the member is in locking position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
VICTOR ALVER.
