SILVERWARE-POLISH.

Application filed May 24, 1916.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIA NYSTRAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silverware Polishes, and has for its principal object to provide an improved and novel form of polishing device for use with silverware and the like.

Another object of this device is to provide flexible members between which a polishing or abrasive material together with the article to be polished is inserted; to provide means whereby pressure may be applied on either side of the article to be polished in order that the abrasive may act more rapidly. In polishing silverware particularly knives which are straight and flat it is highly desirable to apply abrasive or polishing materials on both sides at the same time. It is further necessary to apply considerable pressure to the cloth or device upon which the polishing material has been placed in order to make the abrasion quicker.

Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in appended claims:

In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my device showing all the essential elements. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which numeral 1 indicates a base block, and 2 a hinged cover block. Base block 1 is channeled near either end as at 3 to allow space for rod 4:, one at either end. Retainers 5 cross directly across the channels 3 and retain the rods 4. within the said channel. It will be understood that the retainers 5 are adjacent either end of the rod and endless cloth or chamois 6 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

which passes around the rods a and up and over in double ply along the top of block 1.

In operation the abrasive is sifted in between the adjacent layers of the chamois 6. The knife is then inserted between the said layers and the cover blocks 2 brought down upon top' of the block 1. The knife is then pulled forward and backward until thoroughly polished. It will be noted that with my device there is no necessity of the polish or abrasivebecoming detached from the chamois and thereby soil the hand. A buffer 7 is provided on the back of cover No. 2 in order that the handles and other irregular portions of silverware may be easily cleaned and polished.

Generally speaking an object of my device is to do away with the ordinary piece of chamois or cloth which is used as a polishing rag.

IVhile I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

IVhat I claim as new and by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of an endless polishing member secured to a base block, and means for compressing the said member against the said block.

2. In a polishing device the combination of a channeled base block, loose rods retained in said channels, an endless and flexible polishing member passing around said rods and over the top of the said block in double ply, a cover hinged to said block and adapted to be closed down upon the top of the polishing member, whereby pressure is applied to an object to be polished which is inserted between the plies of the polishing member.
