Description

l. A. LARSON.
I WRENCH APPLICATION FILED APR- l2, l9l6.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
IVER A. LARSON, F GATZKE, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
Application filed Apri112,191 6. Serial No. 90,696.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, IVER A. LARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gatzke, in the county of Marshall and State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wrenches and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein is included a pivoted side jaw, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character hav-'- ing novel and improved means whereby the movable jaw may be conveniently and effectively adjusted relative to the stationary jaw in order to effect the requisite engagement with the work.
The invention consists in the details of, construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved wrench whereby certain important advantages are attained and thedevice is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated member having one end provided with the stationary jaw 2 herein disclosed as arcuate in form and having its end face concave in cross section and provided with the serrations 3 disposed longitudinally of the member 1 and with the inner face of the curved portion provided with the transversely directed serrations 4.
Immediately adjacent the jaw 2, the member 1 is provided with a lateral extension 5 and the corresponding faces of said extension 5 and the member 1 are reduced, as at 6, to afiord a recess or pocket through which extends the lateral arm 7 carried by the piv- Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1916.
oted jawS operatively engaged, as at 9, with the extension 5. The arm 7 and the connected portion of the jaw 8 are of reduced thickness so that the opposite faces of the major portion of the jaw 8 are flush'with the correspondin faces of the stationary aw 2. The jaw 8 is also arcuate in form and has its end face provided with the serrations 10 disposed longitudinally of the member 1 and the inner face of the curved portion provided with the transverse serrations 11. By having the ends of the jaws 2 and 8 concave in cross section, it has been fully established in practice that a more effective engagement may be had with the work. It willalso be understood that the arcuate opposed faces of the jaws 2 and S will permit the device to be employed with material facility in connection with piping or similar articles.
The arm 7 extends beyond a side of the member 1 and has pivotally engaged therewith, as at 12, the operating rod 14 which extends loosely through the opening 15 formed in the lateral extension 16. It is to be observed that the opening 15 is disposed longitudinally of the member 1 and that the extension 16 is adjacent the end of the member 1 remote from the jaw 2 and that the extension 16 is oppositely directed relative to the extension 5.
The rod 14,extends a predetermined distance beyond the extension 16 and in threaded engagement with said extending portion is the operating member 17 herein disclosed as an elongated rigid loop member having its lnner end portion provided with a head 18 which contacts with the outer face of the extension 16 and the adjacent end of the elongated member 1, whereby it will be perceived that the pivoted jaw 8 may be effectively moved toward the stationary jaw 2. In practice I have found that my improved wrench is particularly adapted for use in places where it is impossible to employ ordinary wrenches and I have also found that my improved wrench can be employed with convenience and facility as a bolt-vise, or as tongs for a blacksmith.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of. the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arwith the operating rod and engageable with the outer face of the lateral extension.
carried by the piv- I 2. A wrench comprising an elongated member provided at one end with a station 25 ary jaw and at its opposite end with a lateral extension provided with an opening, a jaw pivotally mounted upon the elongated member and movable relative to the stationary jaw, a lateral arm carried by the 0 pivotedjaw, a rod pivotally engaged with the arm and extending through the lateral extension of the elongated member, and an oaeratin member in threaded en a ement t: b b
with the operating rod and engageable with 35 the outer face of the lateral extension, said stationary jaw and pivoted jaw being of arc uate formation and having their opposed ends concave in cross section.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 40 the presence of two witnesses.
IVER A. LARSON.
