WILLIAM WILSON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
STRAW HAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Application filed June 26, 1916. Serial No. 105,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WILSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, (who has declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States,) residing at Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to straw hats.
The ordinary straw hatis easily damaged, and frequently completely ruined when subjected to a good shower of rain.
My invention provides a storm or waterproof straw hat of improved construction having a reversible crown or top which can ries a waterproof covering normally concealed against its lower surface by a lining, the crown being adapted for reversal and the waterproof covering for stretching over the entire hat, including the brim, for the purpose of protecting the hat against rain, when advisable or necessary.
My improved convertible hat normally presents the usual appearance as the joint between the reversible crown and the upright portion thereof is relatively close and not ordinarily noticeable. The waterproof covering, being folded or stowed within the inner crown lining, is compactly concealed and the advantages of the usual lining obtained. The reversible crown can be held in normal position in any suitable manner,
but I prefer to provide tapes depending therefrom which are provided with snap fasteners for engaging the upright portion of the crown.
I am aware that my invention is susceptible of modification and the disclosure there; of is to be considered as illustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, dotted lines showing how the top is'reversed; Fig. 2, a similar view, the top having been reversed and the lining and waterproof cover having been drawn over the hat; and Fig. 3, a detail view of one of the pivotal connections.
The upright portion 1 of the crown, and the brim 2 are of the usual construction. The top or crown 3 is disconnected from the upright portion 1 around its periphery at 4:. The joint, however, is sufficiently close to give the hat the usual appearance of a straw hat. The crown or top 3 is pivoted along its minor axis in any preferred manner, one such pivot consisting of the upright wire 5 having a bent portion 6 and an inwardly or laterally extending pivot portion 7. The parts 5 and 6 are sewed or otherwise fastened in an upright position to the interior of the part 1, the lateral portion 7 being provided with a bead 8, and
there is journaled on said portion 7 the hinge or pivot member 9 having bent ends 10 sewed or fastened to the under side of the top 3 and provided with an eye 11 which receives the part 7. I
The. top 3 is held in horizontal position, either before, or after, reversal thereof, by tapes or bands 12 which depend from the forward and rearward edges of said top and are provided with snap fastener members 13 adapted to detachably engage corresponding members 14: on the inside of the part 1 of the crown.
Secured to the central portion of the under side of the reversible crown 3 by a button, snap fastening, or other device 15, is a waterproof cover 16 which may be folded, as shown in Fig. 1, or stretched over the complete hat and under the brim 2. as shown in Fig. 2. The cover 16 is provided with an elastic band 17 which is of such dimensions and adaptability for contraction that it may be disposed under the brim 2, as shown in Fig. 2. for the purpose of holding the waterproof covering 16 stretched over the complete hat. Y i
To hold the waterproof covering 16 infolded or stowed condition, there is provided a lining of cotton, silkor other material 18 which is joined to the periphery of the crown or top 3 at 19 and has a contracted elastic band 20. The lining 18 conceals the waterproof cover 16 and holds it out of the way when it is not desired as covering for the hat, as would be the case when the weather is fair.
The normal condition of the hat is shown in Fig. 1. Should it rain or the wearer desire to cover the hat, the snap fasteners 13, 1 1, are disconnected by reaching up within the hat, whereupon the crown or top 3 may be moved, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, until it is completely reversed, as shown in Fig. 2. The tapes 12 may then be fastened by engaging the members 13, 14. The lining 18 is next drawn down over the upright portion 1 of the crown and then the waterproof cover 16 is drawn down over the lining 18 and completely over the hat and underneath the brim 2, the elastic band 17 holding the cover 16, as shown in Fig. 2. The elastic band 20 holds the lining 18 snugly around the upright portion 1. A reversal of these operations restores the hat to normal'condition.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat provided with a complete relatively stiff crown adapted to be reversed an entirety to bring its underside uppermost and vice versa.
2. A. hat provided with a complete crown pivoted at one of itsaxes and adapted to be reversed as an entirety to bring its underside uppermost, and vice versa.
8. A hat having the top of its crown piv- 7 oted to the upright portion thereof and re versible on said pivotal connection;
4. A hat having a reversible crown provided with a waterproof cover. I
5. A hathaving a reversible crown provided with a waterproof cover which is adapted to be drawn over the hat when the crown is reversed. v
6. A hat, provided with a reversible crown, a waterproof coveradapted to fold against the crown when the hat is in normal condition or to be drawn over the hat when said crown is reversed, and means for holding said cover infolded condition.
7. A hat provided with a reversible crown, a waterproof cover adapted to fold against the crown when the hat is in normal condition or to be drawn over the hat when said crown is reversed, and a lining adapted to serve as a receptacle or container for the waterproof cover when the latter is folded.
8. A hat comprising a brim, upright crown portion, and crown top pivoted to the upright crown portion and reversible in relation thereto, detachable fastening devices for connecting the reversible crown to the upright crown portion, a waterproof cover connected'to, and bodily carried by, the reversible top or crownand having means for fastening it under the hat brim when the crown is reversed and the said cover is drawn over the hat, and a contractible, inner lining for the reversible crown which is adapted to stow. or contain the waterproof cover in folded condition and itself being adapted to be drawn over the upright portion of the crown, said lining having means adapted to hold it in either of said positions.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiiix my signature.
WILLIAM WILSON.
