Be it known that I, .lVILLmM G. DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing Tables or Cabinets, of which the following is a specification. 1

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ironing tables or cabinets, the primary object of the inven tion being toprovide a pedestal type of ironing table, wherein the leg or pedestal is designed to be firmly secured to the floor adjacent to a wall orwainscoting, and the top or cabinet portion is pivotally supported upon said leg or pedestal so as to be folded to an out of the way position parallel with the wall or wainscoting or downwardly to a horizontal position for use.

Another object of the invention isto pro vide a pedestal which is hollow to form a compartment for irons and other accessories used in connection with the table,;and which embodies. means for firmly supporting the table when in a horizontal position, and means cooperating with looking 'devices on the table for firmly locking the table in its two-stated positions.

Another object of the invention is to provide means upon the pedestal and table back, by means of which when the table'is arranged in position for use, the back thereof which supports the ironing board proper will be held firmly against springing under- .any of the working pressures commonly employed.

Another object of. the invention is to provide a table in which the back supporting the ironing board is adapted to be covered and partially inclose'd by a. top or front section which is hinged or pivoted thereto so as to be swung to a vertical position when the back and board are. horizontally disposed for use, and in which simple and effective means for locking the cover or front section in such position is included in the structural organization.

7 Still another object of the invention is to provide means for detachably'securing-a reversible board to the back, to provide means for supporting the iron in use upon the cover or top section, to provide a sleeve or bosom board, which iron support and sleeve or bosom board may be adjusted into and out of operative positions, and to pr0- vide other features of construction whereby an ironing table possessing material advantages is produced.

With these and other objects in view. the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is .a front elevation of an ironing table embodying my invention, showing the same with the table top turned up, as when the table is not in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the pedestal appearing in vertical section. In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a hollow pedestal 1,,made of sheet metal, and preferably in the form of a cylindrical tube, riveted or otherwise suitably secured at its lower end toa base ring or member 2 having a flange3 for the passage of screws or other fastenings, whereby it may be secured to a floor or other suitable foundation 4. A partition 5 is provided within the tubular pedestal at a point about midway of the length thereof, which subdivides the interior of the pedestal and forms the bottom of a storage chamber 6 in which oils and other accessories used in conmeat, and is provided at its top with a head 7, preferably of rectangular or oblong rectangnlar form, and having an annular flange 8 depending within and secured to the top of the pedestalby means of which the head is firmly fastened thereto. The central portion of the head is provided with anopening 9 giving access to the chamber 6 and adapted to be closed by a lid 10 having a knob or handle 11. The lid 10 lies flush with the top of the head when applied S0 that the knob or handle will not unduly project.

The head 7 is bifurcated at one side to provide lugs or horizontal knuckles 12 and is recessed or cut away at its diametrically opposite side to form a latch engaging portion 13. As shown, the knuckles 12 project upward from the head, and arranged adjacent to the portion 13, on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the head, are up standing supporting lugs or bosses 13 having reduced dowels or projections 14.

The table top 15 consists of two main sections, to wit, a back section 16 and a top or cover section 17, which are combined and cooperate in the manner hereinafter described. Secured to the rear or undersurface of the said back section 16 is a longitudinally eX- tending channeled supporting bracket 18 having a cross piece or portion 19 cast or otherwise formed integral therewith, the said bracket and its cross piece being suitably constructed for firm attachment to the back by screws or other suitable fastening members. The lower end of the bracket, which extends centrally and longitudinally of the back, is provided at its lower or foot end with a pin 20, and at its upper or top end is provided with a pin 21, which pins extend through the webs or flanges of the channeled bracket and pivotally support latch members 22 and 23, the said latch members being pivotally coupled for movement in unison by a connecting rod 24. The free end of the latch member 22 is provided with a beveled nose 25 and a notch 26 for cooperation with a locking slot or opening 27 in the side of the tubular pedestal, by means of which the table top may be locked firmly when disposed in a vertical position, the beveled nose 25 adapting the free end of the latch to tilt up when striking the outer portion of the wall of the opening 27 so that it will pass freely through such opening and then drop by gravity into locking engagement with the lower portion of the wall thereof. When the cabinet or table top is arranged in the position stated, it will be disposed perpendicularly in a plane in advance of the tubular pedestal and will partially conceal the same, and said cabinet or top may be of a suitable character to serve as an ornamental as well as useful article of furniture. The latch 23 has its outer end extended to form a handle and is provided with a notch 28 for engagement with the portion 13 of the head 7 when the cabinet or table top is disposed in a horizontal position, so as to lock the same firmly easily from a vertical to a horizontal position, and vice versa. It will be evident that by depressing the latch 23 when the cabinet or table top is vertically disposed, the latch 22 may be withdrawn from engagement with the keeper slot 27, whereupon the cabinet or table top may be tilted to a horizontal position, in which position the dowels or projections 14: of the lugs 13 engage seats or openings 31 in the back 16, whereby a connection between the back and head is established to firmly hold the back against any tendency to lateral motion. It will thus be evident that a firm support from the top will be provided, and, inasmuch as the bracket 18 and its cross piece are rigid in character and extend practically the entire length of the back 16, the latter will be held from yielding under any pressure exerted upon it during the ironing operation at any point along the ironing surface of the table top.

The back section 16 is adapted to be received and inclosed within and by the rabbeted portion 32 of the side and end walls of the cover or top section 17, which is of proper form to receive and inclose both the back and the ironing board 16 supported thereon, whereby the board is protected from the access of dust and dirt when not in use. WVhen the top or cabinet is swung downward to a horizontal position as stated for use, the top or cover section 17 is swung upward to a vertical position parallel with the wall and between the same and the plane of the pedestal, and is locked and held'in such position by means of a longitudinally curved or segmental latched member 33, which is pivoted at its upper end to a pin 34 extending between channel forming flanges 35 on a bracket plate 36 firmly fastened to and within the hinged end of the cover or table top, the said bracket 36 .be-

ing bifurcated at its lower end to provide hinge knuckles 37 connected by a hinge rod 38 with knuckles 39 on a bracket plate 10 fastened to the adjacent end of the back 16 by bolts or other suitable fastening members 41. The lower or free end of the latch 33 passes downward and rearward through a guide slot-42 formed in the back 16 and also 139 through a slot &3 in a combined guide keeper plate 4%, which is transversely notched to receive a transversely disposed longitudinally sliding latch plate l5 having a lateral notch 46 in one of its longitudinal edges and having at its opposite ends combined handles orfinger pieces and stop members 47 and 48.

The lower end of the latch 33 terminates in a stop hook 83 and a notch 4:9 for co operation with the latch plate 45, it being evident from the construction disclosed that when the notch 46 of the plate 45 is in registry with the slots 4.2 and T3 the hooked end of the latch is free to move through the slots so that the table top or cover may be raised and lowered without resistance. By however shifting the plate 45 so that the notch l6 will be out of registry with said slots, the hooked end of the latch 33 on the opening movement of the table top or cover will strike an adjacent unapertured portion of the latch plate and will be held from further upward movement, so that by manipulation of the latch &5 said latch may be engaged with the notch a9 to lock the table top or cover in raised position and against any possibility of its accidentally falling. The upper end of the bracket plate 36 is preferably bifurcated to form hinge knuckles 4:9 for the reception of a pin or pintle 50 which is pivotally engaged by knuckles 51 on a swinging iron holding plate or shelf 52 which is adapted to be swung upward from a position within and parallel with the cover or top section to a position at right angles thereto for use, in which position the said shelf or plate is brought to rest against supporting lugs 53 formed on the bracket 36. Preferably the upper surface of said shelf or bracket is'dished or recessed so as to hold the iron or other article supported thereon from slipping off or becoming accidentally displaced.

The upper surface of the back section 16 is of proper form and size to support the ironing board 16 which'may be of conventional form and which is provided at one end with a central notch 5st and at its opposite end with a pair of notches 55, arranged on opposite sides of its longitudinal center, to respectively receive retaining lugs or projections 56 suitably secured to the back, and

with which the notched portions of the board are held in engagement by pivoted turn buttons 57, such fastening means permitting the board to be applied and removed with ease and facility. The board is preferably provided with a fabric covering 58 the longitudinal edges of which extend over upon the back or underside of said board and are provided with eyelets 59 for the passage of a lacing thong 60 by means of which the cover is fastened in position and may be drawn to the desired tension. It will be evident that the construction of fastening sleeve or bosom board 61 which is disposed at a suitable point upon the rear surface of the back 16, said board being pivotally 'mounted adjacent one end upon a pivot pin 1 or bolt 62 and having concentric therewith an arcuate slot 63 through which passes a bolt Get which also passes through the back and is provided with a wing 'nut'65, whereby the sleeve or bosom board may be swung outward from behind or beneath the back 16 to a greater or less angle thereto for use, as will be readily understood. I

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and mode of use of my improved pedestal, ironing cabinet or table will be readily understood, and it will be seen that the invention provides a device of this character which is comparatively simple of construction and inexpensive of production, and which at the same time affords the manifold conveniences stated and provides an article which is stanch and durable and may be made as ornamental and attractive as desired.

I claim 1. In an ironing table, a supporting pedestal, a supporting member at the top of the pedestal, a table hinged .to and at one side of said supporting member, and means carried by the table to interlock with the diametrically opposite side of said supporting member to hold the table in a horizontal position for use.

2. In an ironing table, a pedestal, a table pivoted to the pedestal, and latches upon the table for engagement with the pedestal to hold said table in vertical and horizontal positions respectively.

3. In an ironing table, a pedestal, and a table comprising a back and a cover hinged thereto, an ironing board mounted upon the back, and locking means upon the table engageable with the pedestal to secure the table in vertical and horizontal positions.

4:. In an ironing table, the combination of a supporting pedestal having a keeper slot in its side and having a head provided with a keeper portion, a table pivoted to said head and comprising a back, a cover and a board secured to the back, said cover being hinged to the back, and latches pivoted to the table and adapted forrespective engagement with said keeper opening and keeper portion, said latches being connected for movement in unison and one being manually operative for shifting the other into and out pedestal having a keeper opening in its side, a head carried by the pedestal and having dowels at one side and a keeper portion between said dowels, an ironing board pivoted to the head, latches upon the board to engage the keeper opening and keeper portion, said table being provided with seats to receive said dowel pins when the table is disposed in a horizontal position, and a connection between said latches for their adjustment in unison.
