Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWARD BUssEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of IVaterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsl in gates, and the object of my improvement is to furnish means for swinging a gate or the like to desired positions with a minimum of eort and without requiring change of position by the operator.
This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate equipped with my improved operating means. Fig. 2 is a detail view, in partial section, enlarged, of connections between parts of the gate and between the gate and the hinge post. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view of parts of the gate and the latch post, including one of the catches for the gate.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved gate operating means may be associated-with various kinds of gates, doors or other swinging closures, so I do not desire to be limited to the exact constructions shown.
The gate shown comprises tubular latch and hinge stiles 7 and 6 respectively connected at top, bottom and `middle by means of horizontal tubular connections 3, 4 and 5, the latter having bifurcated end sleeves 86, whose forks are riveted upon` said stiles. The hinge stile 6 is fixedly connected to a parallel tube or sleeve by the following means: Referring to said Fig. 2, the numerals 26 and 27 represent T-couplings threaded to be secured within the interiorly threaded upper ends ofthe tubes 6 and 15 so as' to have their tubular cross parts in registration, whose hollows are interiorly threadedto receive a vrelatively long screw 33 whereby said couplings are xedly connected. The left-hand branch of the coupling 26 has a screw plug 32. A standard 16 made of pipe of a less diameter than the sleeve 15 is passed through the latter and through the coupling 26 at an openingl,
and has its lower end passed through an orifice in a boxing 24 and seated in a stepbearing 22 in said boxing. A winding drum or sheave 19 is fixed on the standard 16 within said boxing to be rotatable therewith. Said sleeve is supported on the hinge post 1 by the following means: A pair of eye-bolts 14 are mounted on said post. *Collars 17 are, adjustably secured upon the sleeve 1 5 by means of set-screws 34C, so as to rest upon the eyes of said bolts when the sleeve is passed through said eyes. By this means, also, the sleeve 15 may be moved` vup and down over the standard 16 to adjustably elevate the gate as desired. Set-screws 18 pass through the sleeve l5, engage the standard 16 within and hold said sleeve in an adjusted position. To more rigidly secure the tubular parts 15 and 6 together, any suitable connecting means may be used. I have shown a pair of removable clamps 25 employed for that purpose.
The gate may be supplied with a two part tension device composed `of rods 28 having their adjacent ends adjustably connected by a turn-buckle 29, while the upper or left-hand end of the device is secured to the upper left-hand corner of the gate, and the opposite end has a loop 30 slidably engaged about the latch stile 7 at its lower part. This device may be kept in tension by the turn-buckle to maintain the `gate in its horizontal position and prevent sagging. Said gate has its latch and hinge stiles also connected by wires 88 whose right-hand ends are secured about the latch stile 7 and whose left-hand ends are secured to hooks 37 mounted on the hinge stile.
Between the post 2 and the latch stile 7 is a rock-shaft 10 normally parallel with both. The lower end of the rock-shaft is seated in a step-bearing 23 in one end of the boxing 24, and carries a sheave 21 rotatable therewith and also located in the boxing. The two sheaves 19 and 21 are connected by means of an endless cable 20, the latter having two or more turns about each sheave, and being preferably made of tarred rope or other material not likely to be influenced by dampness or weather conditions, and yhaving suitable adhesiveness so as to always be operative in the swinging of said gate.
Eye-bolts 8 and 9 are mounted labove each other in the latch post 2, and are made of extra length to permit of adjustment in case of sagging of the post, due to the draft of the fence wires connected thereto. The rock-shaft 10 is passed down through the eyes ofsaid bolts, and its upper end is bent over angularly to form a hand-crank 11. Sleeves 12 are secured on the rock-shaft 10 by means of set-screws 39 near the upper and lower ends of the latter, and said sleeves have forked arms 13 which embrace the latch stile 7 in spaced relation when the gate is closed.
To open the gate, the crank 11 may be rocked in either direction a suthcient distance to swing open the gate to its full extent or any less amount. IVhen the roclc shaft 10 rocks the sheave Q1 which in turn locks the sheave 19 and standard 16 an equal amount by means of the cable 20, the gate is swung in the desired direction. The rocking of' the shaft 10 also rocks the forked arms 13 to release the latch stile 7 to permit of opening the gate. The connections of the device arev such that when the gate is in the act of closing, the forks 13 swing back to inclose said latch stile.
Various changes may be made in the form, dimensions, materials, and arrangements of the parts of said device, without however, departing from the scope of the principles or protection of said invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a swinging gate, of a rock-shaft on which said gate is mounted for vertical adjustment therealong, another rock-shaft, drums fixed on both rockshafts, an endless cable wound about both drums, and clips adjustably mounted on the second-mentioned rock-shaft and adapted to embrace the free end of the gate releasably when said rock-shaft is rocked to swing the gate into a closed position.
2. The combination with a swinging gate having latch and hinge Stiles, of fixed connections between said stiles, latch and hinge posts located adjacent to said Stiles respectively, a rock-shaft located between the hinge post and hinge stile, brackets on said hinge post in which said rock-shaft is mounted, a tubular sleeve adjustably secured on said rock-shaft, fixed connections between said hinge stile and said sleeve, a rock-shaft located between said latch post and latch stile provided with a crank, hinge-connections on said front post for Vsaidrock-shaft, drums of equal diameters mounted on said rock-shafts, and an endless cable wound about said drums.
3. The combination with a swinging gate,
o'f'a' rock-shaft on which said gate is mount-V ed, a post, a second rock-shaft mounted to rock on said post, drums fixed on both rockanother vertical rock-shaft stepped in theV other bearing, a cable operatively connecting said rock-shafts, and a pair of clips on the second-mentioned rock-shaft adapted to embrace the adjacent free end of the gate releasabiy when the rock-shaft is rocked to swing the gate into a closed position.
5. The combination with a swinging gate, of a closed box fixedly mounted under the gate longitudinally to extend therebeyond at each end, and having orifices in each endV of its top, rock-shafts mounted in said orifices to extend within the box, step-bearings in the box for both rock-shafts, drums mounted on said shafts within the box, a cable wound about both drums, said gate being mounted on one ot said rock-shafts, and means on the other rock-shaft adapted to lock the adjacent free end of the gate releasably when the rock-shaft is rocked appropriateiy.
6. The combination with a swinging gate having a tubular hinge style, of a post, Yan operating rock-shaft mounted between the post and said stile of the gate, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said rock-shaft, said sleeve being rotatably mounted on said post, a coupling member detachably mounted in the upper end of said sleeve, a coupling Y WILLIAM EDWARD BUSSEY.
