GARDEN IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON J. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason, in the county of Ingham andState of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Garden Implement, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a garden implement and more particularly to means whereby the handle of the implement may be quickly and securely attached to the soil engaging portion of the tool, said soil engaging portion being so mounted as to be quickly attached or detached, there being but a single fastening element necessary in order to hold the soil engaging portion fixed relative to the handle.
A further object is to provide a structure of this type which is strong and durable and the parts of which can be readily connected and disconnected.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a portion of the handle formed, at its free end, with the usual wings or enlargements 2 provided adjacent the sides of the upper ends thereof with openings 3 which, in the present instance, are in the form of alining slots. Another opening 4 is provided adjacent the lower end of the enlargement.
The soil engaging portion of the implement can be in the form of a hoe of any desired shape, a rake or the like. In the present instance, a hoe blade 5 has been illustrated and this blade is adapted to fit snugly against either the outer or the inner face of the enlargement 2. This blade is provided, at its upper end, with spaced tongues 6 offset as shown and these tongues are adapted to be inserted through the openings 3 and to fit snugly against either the inner or the outer side of the enlargement 2 while the blade is fitting snugly against the other side of the enlargement. lVith the parts thus positioned a small bolt or screw 7 is inserted through the opening 4 and the corresponding opening 8 in the blade 5 and, when inserted, binds the parts together fixedly so that there is no side play. Furthermore, the tongues 6 by engaging the walls of the opening 3 relieves the bolt or screw 7 of all transverse strain'in any direction and, consequently, there is no danger of cutting the bolt such as would result should the said bolt be depended on to hold the blade 5 against up and down or lateral movement relative to the enlargement 2. The only function of the bolt or screw 7 is to bind the blade 5 against the enlargement, all other movement of the blade relative to the enlargement being prevented by the engagement of the tongues 6 with the walls of the opening 3. In order to hold the bolt or screw 7 against rotation, small lugs 9 are preferably extended from the enlargement 2 so as to engage the angular head of the bolt or screw.
What is claimed is 1. An implement of the class described including a handle portion having an enlargement at its outer end with spaced apertures and with another aperture at its lower end, a soil engaging portion adapted to bear against either the inner or the outer side of the enlargement and having lateral oifset tongues insertible through the upper apertures and adapted to bear against one side of the enlargement, and means extending through the lower aperture in the enlargement and through the soil engaging portion for binding said portion upon the enlargement, said tongues and the walls of the apertures engaged thereby cooperating to hold the soil engaging portion against up and down and transverse movement relative to the fastening means.

An implement of the class described including a handle portion having an enlargement provided with spaced apertures, a soil engaging element adapted to fit snugly against either the inner or the outer face of the enlargement and having offset upwardly extending tongues insertible through the apertures and into engagement with the Walls of said apertures to hold the soil engaging element against up and downancl lateral movement relative to the enlargement, and means extending through the enlargement and the soil engaging element for binding them together andfor binding the 10 tongues and soil engaging element agamst "Gopies'of this' patentzmay be obtained for five cents eaeh,-by addressing the Commissionerof Patents,
