To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY VVI COX, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vindow- Catches, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of this invention are to provide a window catch which will enable one or both of the sashes to be open part way and yet locked against further opening; to thus enable the window to be open for purposes of ventilation without danger of any one entering or being able to open the window for entering; to limit the extent to which the window can be thus opened by releasably connecting one of the sashes to the window frame; to provide a construction whereby such connection can be adjusted to permit opening to different extents; to limit opening of one sash by engagement with the other; to secure simplicity of construction and operation, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought outv in the following description.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a window to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssectional view on line A-A of Fig. 1 showing the catch in operative position, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central cross-section of the catch showing the same in idle position.

In the specific embodiment of the invention illust 'ated in said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a window comprising the usual frame 2 and vertically sliding upper and lower sashes 3, 4: respectively. Upon the upper rail of the lower sash is secured a portion of my improved catch 5 comprising a base 6 adapted to seat upon the said upper rail of'the sash and preferably having a web 7 projecting upwardly therefrom intermediate its side edges. At the opposite ends of said'web and in the same plane therewith are upwardly extending fingers 8, 9 providing a recess 10 therebetween, see Fig. 3. The end of the latch away from the finger 9 provides a nose 1 1- at its top adapted to engage under a stop 15 on the side rail 16 of the upper sash 3 when the latch is swung as just described. In normal position of the latch, however, the stop 15 will pass the said nose 1% without engaging the same, and in order to retain the latch in this position unless positively swung, a spring is suitably positioned for the purpose. As shown in the drawings, the lower edge of the nose end of the latch is recessed upwardly, as at 17, and the base plate 6 is recessed in registration therewith, as at 18, and within said recesses is mounted a spring 19, but obviously the spring may be mounted or positioned otherwise if so desired, so long as it performs the function of swinging the latch to retain the nose 14 out of the path of the stop 15.

Upon the window frame at the side of the window adjacent the latch 11 is secured a suitable chain 20, and preferably the same is placed substantially midway of the height of the window. As shown, a plate 21 having a pair of outwardly projecting ears 22 at its opposite sides and a cross pin 23 between the ears is provided to carry the chain, the plate being screwed to the side of the window frame and alink of the chain taking over the pin.

In operation, any one of the links may be hooked over the finger 9, and forced or wedged between said finger'and the latch. 11 so as to swing the latch toward the outer or upper sash 3. The lower sash may then be raised until the chain is taut and obviously the chain must be short enough and properly positioned so as not to allow the window to be opened far enough for a person to enter. With the latch swung outward by the chain link, the upper sash is limited in the amount it may be lowered by engagement of the stop 15 with the latch, and it is to be understood that the stop is low enough upon the sash to keep the window from being opened so far that a person might reach in and remove the chain. As shown in the drawings, the various parts are arranged so that both the upper and lower sashes may be opened at the same time, but obviously it is within the scope of the invention to lower the stop so that with the lower sash raised to the full extent allowed by the chain, the upper sash would have to be closed.

F or greater strength and guidance of the latch 11 from tilting, I prefer to form upon the base 6 lugs at opposite sides of the spring seat or recess 18 therein, and betwe ii which the latch enters as its nose-end swings downward.

Obviously detail modifications and changes may be made in manufacturing my improved window catch without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and 1'. do not wish to be understood as limiting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.

Ha vinp' thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a window catch, the combination of a base adapted to be secured on one sash, a

latch pivotedwith respect to said base and adapted to swing into position to limit by one end of itself movement of the other sash, a shoulder on said base adjacent the other end of said latch and forming therewith a wedge-shaped space, and 'means'for introduction into said space to hold the latch tilted to limit movement of the other sash.

2. In a window catch, the combination of a base adapted to be secured on one sash, a latch pivoted with respect to said base and adapted to swing into position to limit by one end of itself movement of the other sash, a shoulder on said base adjacent the other end of said latch and forming therewith a wedge-shaped space, and means attached to a fixed portion of the window and comprising a longitudinal series of members any one of which may be forced into said space to hold the latch tilted to limit movement of the other sash.

3. in a window catch, the combination of a base adapted to be secured on one sash, a latch pivoted with respect to said base and adapted to swing into position to limit by one end of itself movement of the other sash, a shoulder on said base adjacent the other end of said latch and forming therewith a wedge-shaped space, and a chain adapted to be secured to a fixed portion of the window and comprising links any one of which may be forced into said space to hold the latch tilted to limit movement of the other sash.
