` and use the same, reference'being Shadi to the accompanying drawings, and' tothe vletters andl figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wearing apparel, more particularly to overalls, and has for its object` to provide the garment with a pocket so formed as to afford safety against its contents accidentally dropping out of the pocket, the formation being effected by a simplicity of construction `involving the minimum expenditure of time, labor and material while at the same time adding to the security or safety and convenience afforded by the pocket.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing 'I and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the features hereinafter described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in Which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a pair of overalls having the invention applied, and Fig. 2 a similar .view with a portion of the pocket brokenl away and a part turned or folded the better to illustrate the interior of the pocket. In the drawing the numeral 1 designates the upper or apron portion of a pair of overalls having the patch portion 2 applied thereto to constitute the pocket. This patch has a top edge inclined upwardly from a to b and downwardly from b to 0,' and has a bottom edge inclining from d toe so that the bottom of the pocket will incline downwardly from next to the sideV of the apron toward its central portion for a purpose hereinafter appearing, the double incline of the top edge serving not only for the easy insertion of the hand but also adding to the safety of the pocket as will later appear. The upper and lower edges and also the outer edge of the patch will be folded and secured by a double rowV of stitching 3, and the patch-y will be attached tothe body of the apron by the same or a similar line ofstitching along the outer and the loweredge and along the portion froml Z1 toV c exceptwhere the latter is left open to form the mouth for a pencilpocket 8 formed by a, line ofl stitching 4' through the apron and patch, while thel inner edge of the patch is'insertedA in the seam 5 off the apron and secured by the stitching 6 of that seam. From the inner corner of the top edge of the patch a line 'of stitching 7' is passed througlrthe patch and apron so1 as to. incline downwardly toward 'the' lower outer corner of the pocket, said line of stitching lying under the mouth of the pocket and forming an inclined passageway at the mouth of the pocket so that articles inserted will pass toward the lower outer corner of the pocket and then by the inclinedl bottom directed toward the lower inner corner of the pocket so as to lie in the compartment below the downward and inwardly inclined line of stitching 7. Thisv will bring the articles into such position that when the wearer of the garment leans forward or to one side the articles will nd a lodgment in the space or compartment beneath and adjacent to the line of stitching 7 so that they cannot slide out of the pocket. Should the wearer lean in the other direc# tion the articles will be caught and vheld either by the line of stitching 7 or by the inclined stitched edge from b to the mouth of the pencil pocket and thus be prevented from sliding out of the inclined passageway immediately under the open inclined mouth of the pocket.
By the simple specially designed top edge of the pocket together with its inclined bottom and the downwardly inclined line of stitching 7 extending from the inner top corner of the pocket so as to form the inclined passageway a pocket is formed which will most effectively prevent articles from accidentally slipping out of thepocket At the same time the easy insertion and, withdrawal of articles from the pocket is provided for, and the certainty `of the articles assuming a position of safety when inserted in the pocket is assured. Again, the features of safety and convenience at the minimum expenditure of time and labor in providing the same is made possible by the special features of construction specified all of which are important items in the manufacture of garments of this character.
It4 is obvious that some ofthe features described may be omitted and Vthe advantages of theother features retained but the best results are obtainable when the several features are employed intheir relation one of the pocket and provided with inclined lines of stitching at both sides of the pocketmouth extending from opposite corners of the open mouth, one line of said stitching extending under the open mouth and in con- -junction withthe other line of stitchingk forming an.. inclined passage-way extending downwardly from the mouth of the pocket.
2. In a garment, a safety-pocket consiste ing of a patch7 secured thereto t0 form an open mouth at the top of the pocket and provided with inclined lines of stitching at both sides of the pocket-mouth, one line of said stitching extending under the open mouth and in conjunction with the other line of stitching forming an inclined passage-way extending downwardly from the mouth of the pocket, the bottom line of the pocket inclining downwardly fromone corner to the opposite corner under the line of stitching which extends under the mouth of the pocket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
RANKIN GARFIELD FOX.
