To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner D. Rosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for its principal object to provide a wrench in which the jaws thereof will serve to more firmly engage with an article as greater pressure is applied to the handle.
Another object of the invention is to pro ,vide a wrench of this character which is constructed of a minimum number of parts and which is strong, durable and efficient in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the maximum limit of movement of the jaws of the wrench may be varied whereby the same may be adapted for operation upon articles of various sizes.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure l'is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being shown in its full open position in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the head of the wrench, showing the same in its open position, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring 'to the drawings by numerals wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the handle of the wrench which is preferably constructed of one piece with the enlarged head 2 from a blank of relatively heavy sheet metal. The head 2 is offset upon one edge of the handle 1 and has its outer face arcuately curved and slotted as at 3, the said slot extending from a point adjacent the inner face of the offset portion 2 to a pointslightly below the inner edge of the handle 1.
A jaw 4, comprising a head 5 having a pair of arms 6 extending therefrom, is adapted to be pivotally mounted upon the offset portion 2 of the handle 1 by means of a pin 7 passing through the arms 6 and offset por= tion 2, the said offset portion 2 being arranged between the arms 6, as is clearly illustrated in the drawings. 7 is offset with respect to the inner edge of the handle 1, so that when the jaw 4 is swung to its extreme open position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, a slight space will be provided between the The pivot pin same and the inner edge of the arms 6. A second jaw 8 is mounted for sliding movement between the arms 6 of the jaw 4 by means of a web 9 which passes between the arms 6 and has its outer edge formed into a head 10 for engagement with the outer edges of the arms. This second jaw is of the same thickness as the arms 6 so that by reducing the same at 9 and providing the head 10, the said jaw is longitudinally slidable with respect to the arms 6, but is prevented from any vertical or lateral movement relative thereto. This second jaw 8 is bifurcated at its inner end to receive the outer end of the handle 1 and has a pin 11 passing through the arms of the bifurcations and through the slot 3 in the enlarged portion 2.
By constructing the wrench, as is shown and described, it will be seen that as the jaw 4 is swung upon the pivot 7, this jaw will carry the second jaw 8 therewith, but as the pin 11 engages against the walls of the slot 3, the said second jaw will be caused to be moved toward or away from the jaw 4, as will be understood. Thus as the jaw 4 is swung upon the pivot 7 to spread the toothed faces of the jaws 4 and 8 apart to engage the same with an object, it will be seen that pressure applied upon the handle 1 will cause the jaws to be forced together,
' the greater the force, the greater the biting action of the toothed faces of the jaws.
By pivoting the jaw 4 to one side of the inner edge of the handle 1, it will be noted that a space is provided between the inner edge of the handle and the adjacent edges of the arms 6 to accommodate the head 10 when the jaw 4 is swung to its extreme open position, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In order to provide means whereby the wrench may be engaged with objects having a greater diameter than the maximum space between the jaws of the wrench, as just described, alined openings 12 may be provided in the arms 6 of the jaw 4 in spaced relation to the openings engaged by the pin 7, and near the ends of the arms. The pin may be disengaged from the first openings and the jaw adjusted outwardly so that the pin may be engaged with the openings 12, thus giving a greater space between the jaws, as will be understood.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and advantages of my improved wrench will be clearly understood and while I have herein shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention, 1 do not wish to be limited. thereto except for such limitations as the claim may import.
I claim:
A wrench comprising a handle having an enlarged arcuate end provided with a slot parallel with the curved edge thereof, a jaw having parallel arms engaged upon opposite sides of said enlarged arcuate end, a pivot pin engaged through said arms and through said enlarged end at one side of the main portion of said handle to permit said arms to swing in an arc to position parallel with said handle, a second jaw having a bifurcated portion engaged upon the curved edge of said enlarged end of the handle a neck portion formed upon one side of said second jaw and engaged between the arms of the first-mentioned jaw outwardly of the enlarged end of said handle, a guide pin engaged through said bifurcated portion of said second jaw through the slot of the enlarged end of said handle to guide said sec ond jaw toward and away from the firstmentioned jaw during movement of said arms to either of their extreme positions.
