Application filed January To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, one Knn'rnn, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar I and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Door-Controlled Electric Switch, of which the following is a specification; This invention has reference to improvements in thatclass of electric switch attachments for doors by which .the switch is automatically operated for shifting .the switch to the open or closed position for turning on or oil a lamp or lamps, in either position of the door, and it primarily has for its object to provide an improved switch attachment for doors of the general'character stated of a simple and inexpensive construction and effective in its operation. Y My invention is more particularly de signed for providing an' improved switch attachment adapted for so actuating the switch device that makes and breaks the light circuit, in such manner, whereby the room, vault, or other compartment, may be kept lighted, either with the door in the open or in the closed position, and when leaving the room, the light may be shut olf,
the operation ofeifecting the control of the light in my construction of door controlled switch difi'ering "from the general run of door controlled switches now in use that work only either with the door open or closed in that with my device the light remains on or off after the door is closed after having been opened to turn the switch to the on or ofi positions.
My invention also has for its purpose to provide, in a door controlled electric switch mechanism an improved actuating member on the door for engaging a switch secured on the door casing adapted for such adjustment, whereby, when moved to a predetermined position, after having operated the switch to turn on the light. in the room, it provides fora constant light in the room and the'switch not operated by. opening or closing the door in going in and out of the lighted room, and for keeping the switch at "the cut ont position during the day or other times when lighting of the lamp or lamps 'within the room is not desired;

In carrying out my invention, the switch device proper is preferably located on the top stile of the door casing on the inside of the door as shown,. and the said switch,
snap switches, in' which interinittent turning of the finger actuated member, in the same direction, alternately turns the light circuit on and off.
In applying the switch '1 to the door casing, the turning post or member 10 is disposed substantially in line with the upper edge of the door opening, and in my arrangement the said post is provided with a horizontally disposed star or ratchet disk 2 that is held from turning ina backward or reverse direction by a stop snap spring 20 pendent fromlthe switch casing 10, as shown.

A bracket 6 that is screwed onto-the inside of the door near itsedge and at the upper-edge thereof and the said bracket projects horizontally and is positioned for exslot 60 of the said member 6' and receive the clamp nuts 71 for holding the bar 7 at the adjusted position.

The pawl 8 also includes a claw-like end adapted to engage with the ratchet or switch turning disk 2 when the door is swung to the opening or closing position, afiat spring 9 on the exten- SlO'l bar 7 being provided for alternately engaging with the fiat sides a--b of the head portion 81 (see Fig. 2).
By reason of providing the turning post of the. switch With a ratchet-like disk arranged to be engaged by the pivoted dog or pawl 8, as shown, it follows that if the lights in the room are out, and the door closed, as the door is opened, the ratchet disk willv be turned in the direction of the arrow 00, and the switch turned to out in the circuit and light the lamps within the room, it be ing also understood that in closing the door, the room keeps lighted, because the pawl or dog slips freely over the ratchet wheel or disk which is held from turning backward by the snap sprin 20, the said dog, as the door is thus closed, is positioned for again interlocking with the ratchet disk and should the door he now opened in passing from the room the pawl or dog, b now turning the ratchet disk will turn oil the light, it being understood that in closing the door the position of the switch is not changed, and the dog or pawl is again put in condition for moving the switch to turn on the light when the door is again opened.
During the day, or at other times, when it is not desired to light up the room, the dog or pawl is shifted out of the operated position, turned back, as shown in Fig. 3, and held to such position by the tension spring 9.
\Vhen my invention applied for being operated by a door that opens to the outside, the dog or pawl is reversed to the position shown in Fig. 8, and the switch cover is removed and shifted to bring the detent or snap spring 20 to the other side, as is shown in the said Fig. 8.
The switch cover which carries the spring stop 20 has a pair of notches 13 and 14: which are disposed approximately diametrically opposite each other, shown in Figs. 53 and 8, when the device is to be applied as shown in Fig. 8, the cover is moved around until the notch 14 engages the key 15 of the porce lain base and thus dispose the stop '20 on the other side of the switch so that the near side is free for the unobstructed movement of the dog 8. Fig. 5 shows the notch 13 in engagement with the key 15, this being the case before the cover has been adjusted to accommodate the device to an outside opening door, as shown in Fi g. 8. The ratchet or star disk is then set back a couple of notches to the left and after the disk is thus shifted, it is turned back to the right tight.

From the foregoingv description, taken in connection with the drawing, it is thought the complete arrangement, the manner of operation and the advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
What I claim is:
1. In a door controlled switch mechanism, a rotary snap switch device that includes a ratchet shaped turning disk and a reversibly adjustably yielding detent for cotiperating with the said ratchet disk, the said switch device being relatively fixedly mounted on the door casing, a bracket on the door, a yielding pawl pivoted on the bracket for engaging the ratchet disk and having two adjustments whereby'it may be set to actuate the said ratchet disk when applied to an inwardly or to an outwardly opening door, and means on the bracket and engaging the said pawl to hold it to the respective operating positions.
2. In a door controlled electric switch mechanism of the character stated, a rotary snap switch that is relatively fikedly located on the door casing. the said switch including a ratchet shaped turning disk and a back check that coiiperates with the Said disk; in combination witlra bracket member mounted on the door, a pawl yieldingly pivoted to the said bracket member, said pawl having two adjustments whereby it may be set to operate the ratchet disk from either side when the bracket isattached to either the outwardly or inwardly closing door, and means for yieldingly holding the pawl to either of its adjusted positions.
3. In a device of the character stated, a relatively fixedly located rotary snap switch, a ratchet turning disk and a back snap spring for the same, a relatively movable bracket, a pawl yieldingly pivoted on the said bracket and/having a claw to engage the said ratchet disk, the said pawl being swingable on its pivot to operate in either of two positions in substantially 180 apart.
4. In a device of the character stated, a
relatively fixedly located rotary snap switch,
a ratchet turning disk and a back check pawl for the same, a relatively movable bracket, a pawl yieldingly pivoted on the said bracket and having a claw to engage the said ratchet disk, the said pawl being swingable on its pivot to operate in either of two positions in substantially 180 apart, the said post comprising a pair of extension members and means for securing the said members together.
