AUTOMATIC SWITCHFOR ELECTRIC LIGHTS.
Application led April 25,
My invention relates to improvements in automatic switches.
The object of my invention is to provide a Switch of the character described which is adapted to control a lamp circuit within a' cellar, or room, and one thatI is operated upon the opening and closing of ai door or the like. y
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plane view of the switch box, taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 2, with the cover thereof removed, showing the operating elements, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view line 2--2 of Figure 1.
I Referring to the drawings inodetail, the numeral 1 designates as door frame or the like to which my improved switch is applied, while the numeral 2 designates a door.
The door frame 1 has secured thereto adjacent its door edge a rectangular receptacle 3 formed of metal or suitableplastic com# position, the'same having mounted therein the various operating elements of the switch, and having detachably secured thereto a cover plate 4.
Mounted'within the receptacle 3 is a stem 5 thel same having rotatably mounted thereon a sleeve which has secured thereto av hill and dale cam wheel 7 and a ratchet Wheel 8. The receptacle 3 has arranged in its wall adjacent the door edge an opening 9 through which passes a cam operating bolt 10 the same adapted to engage and-be operated upon the opening and closing of the door 2 by a plate 11 carried upon its edge.
That portion of the bolt 10 which lies within the receptacle 3 is rounded, as at 12, and is supported by a projection 13 formed integral with the bottom of the receptacle. In-
13 and the enlarged portion of the bolt 1() is a coiled spring 14, the same adapted to project the bolt 10 outwardly to be operated by the plate 11 upon the openingxand closing of the door.
The free end of t e reduced portion 12, of the bolt 10, has secured thereto a spring eletaken on the ment 15 having an enlarged end portion 16 for en agement with the ratchet 8 carried upon t e sleeve 6. Thus it will be seen that upon opening and closing of the door the inwardly and outwardly movement of the bolt 10 will cause the rotation of the sleeve 6, thereby rotating the cam 7 in a step by step movement. l
1923. j Serial No. 634,434.
In order to revent the backward rotation of the ratchet I have secured to the bottom of the receptacle 3 a leaf spring 17 the end of which is adapted to frlctionally engage the ratchet wheel and hold the same against unauthorized movement.
The receptacle 3 has further arranged within one of its walls suitable openings 18 receiving therein the insulated bushings 19 through which pass the stems 20 and 21, the ends of each within the receptacle having secured thereto the resilient contact members 22 and 23, respectively. The contact member 23 has secured to its end portion, and insulated therefrom, a U-shaped bracket 2/1 having mounted therein for rotation a roller 25, the same adapted to ride upon the cam wheel 7 and move the contact'member 23 upwardly to engage the second contact member 22, thus completing the circuit the lead wires of which are connected to the stems 20 and 21 by the usual clamping nuts 26.
Briefly summarizing the operation of my improved switch, the same is as follows `Assuming that the parts are in position as indicated in the drawings, when the door 2 is opened the spring moves the bolt 10 forwardly at which time the. enlarged head 16, of the bolt, engages the ratchet wheel 8 and rotates the sleeve 6, together with the cam Wheel 7, the latter causing the upward movement of the contact 23 to engage the Contact 22, thus completing the circuit. Vhen the door is closed the head 16 is moved backwardly to again engage ,the ratchet and upon the opening of the door the cam will be rotated sutliciently to permit the Contact member 23 to move downwardly, thus breaking the circuit.
It is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of my improved machine will be clear from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. l do not limit myself to the details of construction and arrangement herein delineated, however, but. reserve as my right all such changed devices as may be included in the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, 7what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zv A switch comprising a rigidly coupled multipoint cam and a ratchet wheel having twice as many teeth as the oints on said cam, a contact arm, a secon contact arm movable into and out of engagement with Contact arms close at every other complete said irst arm, said second arm having a roH- reciprocation of said reeiprocatory member. 10 er contacting with said cam, and a recipro- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I catory member provided with a single pawl have hereunto set my ha'nd at Sheboygan, in for engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel the county of Sheboygan and State of for rotating the ratchet Wheel a space of one Wisconsin.
