SIMON RAMIREZ, OF BBAGK ETIVILLE, TEXAS.
GATE-LATCH,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application filed November 23, 1915. Serial No. 63,007.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMON RAMIREZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brackettville, in the county of Kinney and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to gate latches, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a gate latch which is comparatively simple in construction, and easy to operate,
embodying a permanent member carried structure and a swingable member carried structure, which co-act, and are operated by spring action for locking the swingable members against swinging movement.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the improved gate latch, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, Fig.3 is aperspective view of the improved gate latch, and Fig.
4: is a fragmentary sectional View through the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l designates a gate post which is permanent, and 2 designates the swingable member or gate, 3 designates the structure which is carried by the permanent member or gate post 1, and 4 designates the section of a gate latch which is carried by the gate or the swingable member 3.
The structure 3 comprises a bar 5, which has an attaching plate 6 secured to one side thereof, which plate is attached'to the post 1 in any suitable manner. The bar 5 has a U- shaped metallic strap '7'v secured thereto and extending upwardly therefrom. A pin 8 is inserted through the sides of the strap 7 a short distance downwardly from the wrist or apex thereof, and it pivotallv connects a locking bar 9 to the strap 7. The bar 9 has its forward end 10 curved, as is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The rear end of the bar 9 has metallic straps 11 and 12 extending thereabout, and
secured thereto in any suitable manner,
which straps hold one of the flat sides 13 of a U-shaped resilient or spring member 14:, in engagement with the under surface of the bar 9. The other straight side 15 of the U-shaped spring lat lies in facial abutment with the upper surface of the bar 5 and is held in place thcreon'bymeans of a metallic strap 16, which extends about the rear end of the bar 5.-
The forward end of the bar 5 is reduced, as is shown at 17, and it is provided for ex tending through the guiding strap 18 which is'carried by the bar 19 of the gate carried structure at. The bar 19 of the gate carried structure 4: has an attaching plate 20 secured to one end thereof, which is adaptable for attachment to the gate or swingable member 2 in any suitable manner. The upper surface of the bar 19 is cut away, as is shown at 21, in Figs. 3 and 4: of the drawings, providing an inclined surface 22, over which the lower end of the curved end 10 of the bar 9 rides, during the passage of the bar 19 over the upper surface of the bar 5, during the" looking or unlocking action of the gate latch.
The bar 9 has a knob 23 secured thereto adjacent to its curved end, which knob is provided for manually rocking the bar 9, for raising the curved end thereof for permitting of the passage of the bar 19 off the upper surface of the bar 5, for unlocking the latch.
The connected end 24: of the U-shaped spring 1 1 extends into or between the sides of the U-shaped strap7, so as to prevent displacement of the forward end of the spring with respect to the other structure of the gate latch.
When locking the gate, the swinging movement of the gate into a closed position,
will move the bar 19, so that the reduced end 17 will pass into the guide 18, and force the locking bar 9 upwardly against the tension of the U-shaped spring 14:, permitting the reduced section of the bar 19 to pass inwardly of the curved end 10 of the bar 9. The spring 1 1 will then act for moving'the locking bar 9 downwardly so that the curved end 10 will engage the upper surface of the bar 5, which will securely lock or latch the. gate in a closed position. When 7 combination and arrangement of partsmay necessitate alteration, to; which the patentee is entitled, prov1ded fsuch alterations are comprehended Within the scope of What is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. In a gate latch, a stationary member carried structure including a bar having a beveled end, an attaching plate secured to said bar, a locking bar pivotally, supported above and substantially parallel to said first named bar and terminating inward thereof, said locking bar having its forward end curved,a U-shaped spring secured to said bars for holding said locking bar 111 a'locked posltion, a swmgable member carried structure including a baradapted for sliding movement over the upper surface of said first named bar for mov ng said lockmg bar upon its pivotal connectlon for "movement beyond the locking end thereof,
said swingable member carried bar being beveled for facilitating its sliding movement beneath said locking bar, and a guide member carried by the under side of said swingable bar adapted to engage said beveled end of said first named bar whereby said swingable bar is guided into engagement with said locking bar.
2. In a gate latch, a stationary member carried structure including a bar having a beveled end, an attaching plate secured to said bar, a locking bar pivotally supportedabove and substantially parallel to said first named bar and terminating inward thereof, saidilocking bar having its forward end curved, a U-shaped spring secured to said bars for holding said locking .2
bar in a locked position, a swingable look-- ing member carried structure including a bar adapted for sliding movement over the upper surface of said first named bar for moving said locking bar upon its pivotal connection for movement beyond the looking end thereof, said savingable member carried bar being beveled for facilitating its sliding movement beneath said locking bar, and a U-shaped guide member secured to the under side of said swingable bar adjacent the free end thereof adapted to guide the beveled end of said first named bar therein.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
