siding at 915 Olive street, St. Louis, Missouri, and being a citizen of the United lStates, have .invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Car End Assemblies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as `vill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof Will-occur to persons skilled in the art.

AThe object v'of the invention is to provide a new type of steel end plate adapted to cooperate with a plurality of steel upright'sy to form a car end framing which may enter into the construction of new equipment or be adapted with equal facilityto reinforce the ends of old box and stock cars.

Connected with the corner posts are angle connection plates 2O which are secured by suitable rivets 21 to the rearwardly extending flanges 12 of' the corner posts and to the horizontal leg 22. of the side plate 23 which, in thepres'ent instance, is of angle shape in cross section, its depending leg 2J: being spaced outwardly from theilanges l2 of the lcorner posts to accommodate side posts and braces (not shown) to which the side sheathing 25 is secured.
The end portions of the end plate are', 2vas shown in the drawings, shaped to envelop the outer end portions of the side plates 23 and the top portions of the corner posts 12 and to accommodate this the web A of said end plate terminates at convenient points in proximity to the upper ends ot' the corner posts l2, so that at its ends said end plate is of substantially angular fo-rm in cross section, as best shown in Fig. 7, providing thereby means adapted to closely embrace the upper portions of the corner posts and said outer ends of the side plates.
lVhen the parts are assembled the end plate is provided with af bowed portion within the web portion 8 and apron 9, in which a part of said web portion 8 rests vertically above the end posts and said apron extends downwardly parallel with and is connected by direct rivet connection with the outstanding flanges of said end posts, said apron and web portion thence gradually converging toward the outer sides of the car where thewcb portion 8 merges in said apron portion, as best developed in Figs. 1 and 2. The top flange of the end plate may be bent downwardly at its ends to form a vertical flange 30, which lies parallel with and in close contact with the depending leg 24' of the side plate 23 where said flanges may be connected by suitable rivets 24", as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Thus, the end plate in the construction shown extends beyond the corner posts and incloses the ends of the side plates to which it is secured at the top and sides thereof. Said end plate rigidly connects all the framing members at the ends of the car vand insures more equable distribution ot' the inclosed stresses among said members. The advantages obtained are as favorable as would be those resulting from the use of a pair of Z-bars arranged with their webs at right angles to each other, with the added advantage that the end plate is formed of a single piece of metal which requires no fabrication after it is removed from the press in which it is `formed. The d plate may be theoretically divided into ivo portions in which the Z-shaped portion arranged with its web 7 supports the vertical load imposed and the Z-portion of said plate arranged with its web 8 horizontally resists the stresses resulting from butting operations and pressure of the lading within the car.
l do not desire to limit myself to the particular arrangement above described, as it is apparent that changes in the form ot some parts of the structure may be made within the scope of the appended claims. 'For eX- aniple, rolled shapes of I or L section may be substituted for the Z-shaped end posts shown. In cars having single-sheathed sides and ends, angle corner posts as shown may be of W-section, as desired.
What I claim is: I 1. ln combination in`a car endy construction, a plurality of flanged end posts, corner posts and side plates, and a pressed metal.

3. In combination in a railway car, end posts, corner posts, side plates, and an end plate formed from a single sheet of metal enveloping contiguous end portions of said posts and plates.
4. ln combination in a railway car, an end sheathing, end posts connected through flanges thereof to said'sheathing, flanged corner posts, side plates connected with said corner posts and an end plate having an angularintermediate portion with a depending apron portion overlapping and being secured to said posts and a top flange overlapping and being secured directly to said side plates.
5. In combination in a railway car, an end sheathing, end posts and corner posts connected thereto, an end plate having an angle shaped web with integral top and bottom flanges, said bottom flange resting on the outer side of said end posts and said top flange extending rearwardly overlapping and being adapted for connection with car side plates. y
6. A car end comprising, in combination, end and corner ports, sheathing connected to saidposts, an end plate having a web or ycomprising` an angle shaped web, the end portionsof said plate inclosing end portions of side plates and corner posts. j
8. As an-article of manufacture, a. pressed metal car-end-plate comprising a single sheet'of metal having an angular web portion Wider at its middle portion, both vertically and horizontally, than near its ends and having a vertical apron portion and an inwardly disposed top flange integral With said web portion adapted for direct connection to the side plate of a car.
' 9. As an article of manufacture, an end plate for a railway car, said plate comprising` a vertical web portion, a horizontal web 1b portion and verticall apron portion,l and providedv also with Vertical anges and 'a top flange adapted for connection with oar framingr members.
