MONOSILL CAR-UNDEBFRAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR M. Sonata, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monosill Car-Underframes, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the inafter described; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of line -3-3 of Fig. 2. fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the section i -4.
The object of the invention is to provide a car under-frame equipped with a single center. sill of sutlicient strength to carry the entire weight of the car and its load, and to provide cross bearers cooperating with said single center sill, which cross bearers shall be properly supported from the center sill and project thereabove, as shown in the drawings and be suitably stitl'ened so that the load may be'carried entirely on the centerv sill.
Another object is to so position these cross bearers with reference to the center sill that the tops of the cross bearers shall project above the plane of the center sill and serve as stops for longitudinally extending nailing strips which are supported by said cross bearers and are nested under outstanding flange of the cross bearers at one end as shown particularly in Figs. 3 and at.
Referring specifically to the parts, F is the center sill, which may be of any preferred form, thouglr it is shown as comprising a rolled I section with wide top and bottom horizontal flange and with vertical web. The bottom flange H and the top flange G may, within the spirit of this invention, comprise separately formed angles or other commercial forms of metal riveted to he Specification of Letters Patent.

and above the top of, the center sill is a single rolled channel member I which is connected through. its bottom flange with the center sill by means of connecting plates B B and is provided wit-h a recess S in its lower part for the reception of the upper portion of the single center sill, as best shown in Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the cross bearer channel it will be noted that the top flange 1 is continuous from end to end, while the bot-tom flange Qis intermitted at the recess S above referred to. web of said channel is flanged laterally outward from the major portion of the vertical web thereof, as best shown in Figs. 2 and l, and this laterally extended flange is secured by rivets 4 directlyto the top flange of the center sill.
The connecting plates 13 B may be of triangular shape as shown and are provided with flanges 5 through which flanges extend rivets 6 for joining said connection plates with the web of the center sill. shown in Fig. 1 the connection plates B B extend laterally some distance beyond the edges of the recess S and are connected through horizontal flanges 7 directly with the lower flange 2 of the channel shaped cross bearer so that said cross bearer is connected by its web to the top flange of the center sill and by its bottom angles through the connection plates B B with web of said center sill, thus producing a structure of proper stifin'ess for use in a car of this type.
Secured directly to the webs of the channel cross bearers I are brackets 10 of angle shape, upon which rest the wood nailing strips 11, to which wood nailing strips the floor 12 of the car is secured.
As will be seen in Figs. 3 and 4, the nailing strips project at one end under the top flange 1 of the cross bearers I, and are preferably secured in position by through bolts 13.
Any form of side sill may be used with the cross bearer constrdction described, though for convenience of illustration I have shown the Z sections 15.

2. In a car underframe, the combination with a center sill, of a continuous rolled metal cross bearer straddling said. sill and having an outwardly extending flange in tegral with said bearer, conforming to the width of, and resting on the top of said sill.
3. In a car underiframe, the combination comprising a single center sill provided with relatively vertical web, of a cross bearer consisting of a single continuous rolled and flanged member-cut away to form a sill receiving reccss wider than the thickness of said sill and flanged connecting plates secured directly to said cross bearer and to the web of said center sill bridging said recess.
4. In a car unde-rframe, the combination comprising a single center sill provided with relatively vertical web and horizontal top flange, of a continuous cross-bearer recessed to accommodate the top flange of said sill, an integral flange extending laterally from the web of the cross bearer and connected to the flange of the sill and connection plates disposed in a plane parallel to the crossbearer and secured directly to the cross beam and to the web of the center sill.
5. In a can underframe, the combination comprising a single center sill provided with relatively vertical web and horizontal top flange,ofa continuous rolled channel shaped cross bearer recessed .for said sill, a flange extending laterally from the web of the cross bearer and connected to the flange of the sill and'connection plates secured directly to the bottom flanges of the cross bearer and to the web of the center sill, said connection plates completing the bottom flange of the cross bearer to the sill.

In a car underframe. thecombination comprising a single center sill provided with relatively vertical web and horizontal top flange, of a recessed cross bearer the recess of which receives the upper part of said sill whereby the cross bearer extends above, and laps the side of the sill, and bracing means connecting the web of the cross t-ional bracing means extending from a flange of the cross bearer to the web of the sil I 7; In a car underframe, the combination comprising a single center sill provided with relatively vertical web and horizontal top flange, of a cross bearer formed from a single rolled channel recessed to receive the upper portion of said sill and the vein of the cross-bearer lapping the top flange of the sill.

In a monosill car underframe the combination with a single I section center sill having substantially vertical web and laterally extending top and bottom flanges, of a channel sect-ion cross bearer extending above said center sill having cut away poi tions forming a recess adapted to receive said center sill and having part of its Web overlapping the upper flange of said center sill, and angle brackets extending from and connecting the bearer on opposite sides of said recess to the web of said center sill.
18. In a monosill car underframe the combination of a single center sill in the form of an I-beam and a cross bearer of rolled metal having a recess in the underside thereof, adapted to receive said center sill, in-
tegral means co-extensive with the width of the top flange of the sill for attaching the web of said cross-bearer to said top flange, said recess being of a width adapted to contain the upper flange of said center sill whereby the top of the cross-bearer may be positioned at different vertical distances from the center sill by dee ening the recess.
19. In a monosill car un erframe the combination of a single center sill in the form of an I-beam and a cross-bearer of sheet metal having a recess in the underside thereof adapted to receive said center sill, integral means oo-extensive with the width of the to flange of the sill for attaching the web oi said cross-bearer to said top flange, said recess being of a width adapted to straddle the upper flange of said center sill to osition the to of the cross-bearer at di erent vertical istances from the center sill, and vertically disposed connecting lates extending from the Webs of said sills to said cross-bearer and outlining the lower side of said recess.
