To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HARRY M. PITLAGER, a residing at St. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in. Side-Sill Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part 'of this specification, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a side sill bracket of my improved construction. This invention relates generally to car construction and more particularly to a reinforcing and strengthening bracket utilized at the lower corners of the car body in conticularly designed for use in connection with nection with the underframe and the end frames.
In order to overcome the tendency of car bodies to telescope during collisions various structures have beendevised andare at present in general use, whichstructures includecast metal underframes, one-piece end frames and combined .double body bolsters and platforms. To further strengthen and reinforce the ends of car bodies so as to reduce to a minimum the tendency of said bodies to telescope during collisions l propose to provide strengthening and reinforcing members in the form of angle brackets that are applied to the side sills of the underframe and to attach to said angle brack- 'ets the lower side portions of the end frames. When properly applied for use the base of the bracket rests directly upon a horizontally disposed flange 10 which projects outwardly from the lower portion of the side sill 10. The lower portion of the side member of the end framelQ bears directly against the front side of thebracket and thes'eengaging parts are rigidly fixed to one another by means of rivets or in any suitable manner. In this i construction the inwardly projecting bracket extends entirely across the lower portion of the bracket, as designated by 15 and this bracket bears directly upon and is rigidly fixed to the corresponding portion of the underframe. In this form of device integral strengthening webs 15 extend from the ends of the bracket or flange 15 upwardly along the front and rear edges of the main body portion of the bracket.
My improved reinforcing and strengthening bracket is preferably cast in a single piece so that it can be readily applied for use, and when properly combined with an underframe and end frame provides a very strong and comparatively light construction which unites with the end frame and resisting all end shocks and crushing stresses, thereby minimizing the tendency of telescoping of the cars due to collisions when said cars are running at high speed.
By the use of reinforcing brackets of my improved construction the tendency of the upper portion of an end frame to swing inwardly under crushing strains is resisted and the brackets themselves are rigidly supported upon the underframe by the engagement of the rear portions of the flanges or brackets 15 against the shoulders 16.
The bearing of the bracket or flange 15 directly on top of the side sill of the end frame and against the shoulder 16 removes all shearing strain from the rivets utilized in fastening the bracket to the underframe.
My improved brackets, while particularly designed for use in connection with cast metal underframes and cast metal end frames, can be advantageously employed in connection with built-up structures, and when combined with either integral or builtup structures provides a very strong, rigid construction which is anti-telescopic in effect for the reason that it effectually braces the lower side portions of the end framing against end shocks and crushing stresses.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved structure can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a car underframe having shoulders on its side sills and a car the lower side portions of the end frame and the shoulders on the side sills of the underframe.
2. The combination with a car underframe provided with shoulders on its side sills and a car end frame, of brackets positioned between the lower side portions of the end frame and the shoulders on the side sills and means for rigidly fixing said brackets to the underframe and end frame.
3. The combination with a car underframe and end frame,of brackets positioned between the lower side portions of the end frame and said underframe and the heel portions of which brackets bear against shoulders on the underframe.

The combination with a car underframe and end frame, of brackets positioned between the lower side portions of the end frame and said underframe, the heel portions of which brackets bear against shoulders on the underframe and means for rigidly fixing said brackets to the underframe and end frame.

7. The combination with a car underframe and end frame, of brackets positioned between the lower side portions of the end frame and underframe and flanges projecting inwardly from said brackets, which flanges bear against shoulders formed on top of the side sills of the underframe.
8. The combination with a car underframe and end frame, of brackets positioned between the lower side portions of the end frame and underframe and flanges projecting inwardly from said brackets, which flanges bear on top of the side sills of the underframe and the heel portions of which flanges bear against shoulders on the underframe.
9. The hereindescribed car end frame reinforcing bracket comprising a plate adapted to engage the side sill of an underframe and the lower side portion of an end frame and a lug on the heel portion of said bracket, which lug overlies a portion of the underframe and bears directly against a shoulder on the side sill of said underframe.
10. The hereindescribed reinforcing bracket for the end frames of car bodies comprising a plate having a marginal flange, which plate is adapted to be applied to the end sill of a car underframe and a lug on the heel portion of which plate for engage ing a shoulder on the side sill of the underframe.
11. The hereindescribed reinforcing bracket for car end frames comprising a plate, means for rigidly fixing said plate to the side sill of an under-frame and a horizontally disposedflange projecting inwardly from said plate for engagement with the top of the underframe and with a shoulder formed on said underframe.
