frame, having center sills extending con tinuously past the end sills of the car to the platform bufl'er beams, together with an improved means of fastening the buffer beams to the center sills, and also the combination therewith of antitelescoping end posts connected to the buffer beam and to the. end sillsin such manner as to utilize the full strength of the posts. 1
End sill'castings have heretofore been constructed for dummy or non-vestibule cars in which-a one piece end sill has been employedextending across the full width of the car, but such construction does not involve the problems of eflicient fastening for outer and inner end posts or the means of transmitting anti telescoping stresses to center sills nor the peculiar fastening to center sills covered by my invention.
.The recognized importance of safe-guarding :the lives of passengers has led to the wide adoption of the double or U-shaped anti-telescoping end post construction covered by Patent 1,055,615 granted to Richmond Dean, but this has heretofore only been employed in combination with cars in which theentire end construction of the car underframe and the platform framing was made up in one integral casting. Such known constructions do not include the important combination of continuous center sills extending the full length of the cars to the-end of the platform, with which construction it is difficult to obtain an entirely satisfactory method of "attaching a cast bufier beam so as to adequately brace and secure the buffer beam to prevent its failure on account of insufiicient fastening or support when in accidents heavy blows are re- 7 ceiy' ed on one or both of the anti-telescoping 1end.;posts,arid a construction which will permit the full strength of the end posts to be utilized.
In practical car construction the space between the center sills at the ends of the platform is subject to limitations in width, and as-this space is also ordinarily occupied by the buffer spring housing attachment it is usually so limited in extent that it is not possible to apply the number of rivets necessary for sufli'cient strength toutilize the full resisting value of the double type ofantitelescoping posts either integral or separate.
According to my invention the spring housing is made an integral part of the buffer beam and casting and formstheprincipal means by which the buffer beam is secured to the center sills and it is also provided with means of attachment to the end sill and for supporting the platform flooring, whereby the difliculties of the ordinary constructions are avoided.
In order that the invention may be readily understood 'a preferred embodiment of the same is set forth in the accompanying drawings and in the followingdetailed description based thereon. The invention is susceptible of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms and the drawings and description are therefore to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarily limited sense. i
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the car underframe and connections showing the end posts in horizontal section; Fig.2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections on "the lines 33 and H respectively of Fig. 1; and Fig. .5 is an irregular longitudinal section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. .1.
.As illustrated, the end sill is indicated at 10, the buffer beam at .11, the center sills at 12, the center sills cover plate at 13, the end sill cover plate at 14, provided with an upturned flange 15, the usual carry iron at 16 and the platform step risers at 17.
Cast integral with the buffer beam 11 is a buffer spring housing 18 extending rearwardly therefrom and having wall flanges 19 by means'of which the said housing is firmly secured to the forward ends of the center sillsf This housing also has an integral rearwardly extending flange 20 overlying and se urely f en by me ns o rivets to the forward end of the center sills cover plate 13. On both sides of tl ie l ou sing are integral flanges 21 extending out Wardly above the center sills and attached thereto by means of angle members 22, said flanges extending upwardly at 23 and again outwardly at :24 underneath and serving as a support for the platform flooring 25.
In combination with the buffer beam spring housing and center and end sill J arrangement described I prefer to employ, as illustrated,'tlie integral U-shaped end post construction hereinbefore referred to, comprising outer end post members 26 and inner end post members 27, the former extending downwardly through the bufler beam, which for the purpose is provided with pockets 28, having a curved end wall 29, while the latter extends downwardly in front of the end sill and is riveted to and supported by the up turned flange 15 of the end sill cover plate 14:. .T he outer and inner end post members are "connected below the platform and along each side'of the center sills by a strut portion 30, which as illustrated, forms the bottom of the U although the end post members 26 and 27 may be separate and the truss member 30 may also be separate, extending between and connected tothe lower portions of the end posts. 4
By. my improved construction, as above 1 described, all stresses on the buffer beam are transmitted directly to the center sills. The spring housing by means of its wall flanges and its rear flanges tie'thestructure together, its rear flange also serves as means for connecting the casting to the heavy center sill cover plate whereby the bufiing shocks are transmitted to the end sill. The great depth of the vertical wall flanges and the walls ofthe housing itself provide ample surface essential for the large number of rivets necessary to a secure fastening of the buffer beam casting to the center sills. Moreover by reason of the secure and rigid connection between the buffer beam casting and the center and end sills and the manner of seating and supporting the double antit'elescoping end posts to the buffer beam and the end sill a degree of strength is attained commensurate with the great strength of the end posts whereby the latter may be utilized to its full extent in resisting strains tending to telescope the car.

and a buffer beam having a spring housing formed integral therewith and lying between the center sills, the center sills having end abutments against the buffer beams, said housing having vertical wall flanges for attachment to the center sills, a rearwardly extending flange overlying and attached to the center sill cover plate, and side flanges extending outwardly above and secured to the center gills, of a U-shaped integral end post construction comprising outer and inner end post members, the former extending downwardly through the buffer beam and the latter downwardly in front of the end sill, and strut members integral with the end posts and extending between and connecting the lower portions thereof beneath the platform and on each side of the center sills, the end sill cover plate having an upturned flange secured to and forming a rear support for the inner post members.
