Description

HERMAN Pi BROOKS.
lmprovemen t. in Paring and Slicing Knives.
No. 119,963. Patefited on. 57, 11871,
HEMAN P. BROOKS, or WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PARlNG-AND-SLICING KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,963, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEMAN P. BROOKS, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Device for Paring and Slicing Fruits, Vegetables, and for similar purposes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-- Figure l, a perspective View of the device; Fig. 2, a front view, as attached to aknife-blade; and, in Fig. 3, an end View of the same enlarged.
This invention relates to the construction of a device to be attached to the common knife to govern the depth of out to be taken in paring and slicing; and consists in the arrangement of a bar or guide to be applied to the knife-blade, combined with a device for temporarily attaching the same thereto.
A is the guide, here represented as a plain bar curved upon the side next to the blade. If de sirable, a roll maybe arrangedin this bar to lessen the friction. From this bar extend two arms or supports, B, which bear upon the blade, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and from the bar or other convenient point hooks O or equivalent devices are arranged to hook over or clamp onto the back of the blade, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. To adapt the device to blades of different widths these hooks are made adjustable or elastic. I prefer the elastic hooks, as shown. From the bar at both ends extend rests D, upon which the edge of the blade sits, as seen in Fig. 3, and on these rests I form several notches, into either of which the blade may be set to adjust the space between the blade and bar or guide A, according as the cut to be taken is required to be thicker or thinner.
In operation, after the device is applied in the manner described, the knife is used in the ordinary manner of slicing or paring. The guide or bar bearing upon the upper surface prevents the cut from being any deeper than the space be tween the cutter and guide.
This device may be applied to either side of the knife, as occasion may require.
I claim as my invention-- The hereilrdescribed device for attachment to knife-blades, consisting of a bar, A, supports B, rests D, and securing-hooks O or their equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HEMAN P. BROOKS.
