IMPROVEMENT IN BROILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,892, dated October 10, 1871.

To allv whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, OTHNIEL J. SMITH, of Wauwatosa, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Broilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Figs. 3 and 4 are inner face views ofthe sections composing my invention. Fig. 5 represents the dovetail connection of the sections in perspective.

This invention has relation to certain improvements in reversible meat-broilers; and the. novelty consists in the peculiar construction of the hinge and handle of said broiler, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing illustra-ting this invention, AA represent the halves of a double and reversible broiler, each half being provided with the ordinary bars B and with a sectional handle, C. The handles are each of a half-round y form, with the inner side dat, so that when the two are brought together they form an evenlyrounded broiler-handle, as represented in Fig. l. d indicates a notch, into which the finger or any article may be inserted, for convenience in separating the halves A A. A projecting lip or ange is obviously theequivalent of such. a notch, although the latter is the more preferable since it is not so liable to hurt the hand when the handle is taken hold of. From the flat side of one of the sectional handles a stud, d', projects, and liits into a corresponding recess, d, in the iiat side of the other, serving to hold the handles together and prevent the halves A A from accidentally moving out of place. These halves are constructed with beveled rims, from one of which project-s a dovetailed stud, E, which iits snugly into a corresponding slot formed in a lug, F, which rises from the rim of the other half. The position of both is directly opposite the handle of the broiler. The inner side of the lug F is slightly inclined in such a manner as to admit under and against it the beveled rim of the broiler half A. By means of this lug and stud a hinge is provided, the parts of which may be cast with the broiler,

while their arrangement and construction prevent them from coming apart in any other way than by raising or separating one sectional handle from the other. The outer faces of both of the sections A A are alike, and formed so as to t the stove-openings and receive a lid, G.

The meat to be broiled is placed between the sections A A and the lid placed on top. When the part nearest the re is sufficiently broiled the broiler is reversed and the lid placed on the other side. So, either half may be used separately as a broiler whenever necessary, the separation being so easily effected.

I claim as my invention- The double reversible broiler herein described, consisting ofthe sections A Al having bars B B, and respectively provided with the inclined and centrally-divided lug F, and the dovetailed stud E, and with the stud connections d d", substantially as specified.
