Be it known that I, MARTIN L. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States ef America, residing at Riverside, in the county of River- '3 side and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nail- Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in nail holding devices and particularly to the delivery nozzle of such devices.
lFhe purpose of the invention is to provide a delivery nozzle for a magazine tube in which nails are held, preferably in a belt around the waist worn by a lcarpenter or other mechanic, and from the nozzle' the nails are to be taken, one at a time by the carpenter', rThe nozzle is at the end of the belt or tube, preferably at the right side toward the front of the wearer so that he may talre one nail at a time from the nozzle in his left hand, either by its head or by grasping the shank of the nail, while holding the hammer in his right hand. By this means the nail may be quickly handled in position for use, one by one as needed, without the annoyance to the carpenter of holding several nails while driving but one.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts by means of which the nails are ejected to the delivery portion of the nozzle and retained there, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the Aaccompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the y physical embodiment of my invention, constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a. vertical longitudinal sectional view of the delivery nozzle, sho-wing also a portion of a tube from which the nails are supplied to the nozzle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view'of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nozzle detached. Fig. lis a transverse sectional view of the nozzle.
For the purpose of illustrating the adaptation of my invention ll have indicated as 1 a portion of a magazine tube in which the nails are supplied to the nozzle, the tube being provided with a slot 2 at its under side through which the nails 3 may pass by gravity, and in the slot the nails are sus pended by their heads 4. A spring detent 5 with a transverse bar 6 and nger 'l is designed to hold the nails in the open end of the magazine tube until it is desired to permit the nails to pass into the nozzle.

The rear end of the nozzle is open and cut out as at 11 to accommodate the first finger and thumb of the carpenter, but a bottom 12 braces the two plates 8 and 9 at the underside. The nails are suspended by their heads in the nozzle and pass from the magazine tube along the ledges 13 formed inside the sleeve 10, and then .when they emerge from the sleeve the n ails continue along in the nozzle, theirheads sliding along on the upper edges 13 of the two side plates 8 and 9, Each of the 4side plates is provided with an opening or slot 14, arranged opposite each other and located near the upper edge of the plates.
The slots in the side plates are to accommodate the ej ecting device of the nozzle, and
this device is carried by the oscillatable housing made up of the two side plates 15 and 15, the housing being open at both ends and the top and incasing the nozzle at one end thereof. rlhe closed bottom 16 of the housing is located in an opening in the bottom 12 of the nozzle and under the lower edges of the twoplates 8 and 9, and the two perforated ears 17 and 17 at the ends of the bottom 16 are adapted to receive the pivot or rock pin 18 suspended in perforated ears 19, integral with the walls of the open portion of the bottom 12 of the nozzle. 'lhe housing is adapted to rock on its pivot 18 by pressure from the hand or fingers, and the side plates 15 and 15 are provided, one with a retaining detent 20 and the other with an ejecting pawl 21, the detent being normally held in the slot 14 in plate 8, and the pawl moving through the slot in plate 9. By means of the fiat leaf spring 22 held between the plate 15 and plate 9 and secured under the bottom 16 as by soldering, the detent 2O is held in normal position across the space between the two side plates 8 and 9, the pawl 21 being held out of the path of movement of the nails, as in Fig. 2. finger of the mechanic, the housing is rocked on its pivot with the result that the retaining detent 20 is withdrawn from the path of the nails andthe ejectin'g pawl 21 is pushed into the path of the nails. The forenger contacts with vthe upper front corner of the plate 15, so that when the plate is pressed toward thewnozzle wall, one nail is passed between the detent and the ej ecting pawl 21, the nail being indicated as 3. This nail is in position to be grasped at its head 4: by the thumb and foretinger, if desired, as they manipulate the spring pressed housing and rock it upon its pivot. By preference, however, the nail is withdrawn by the forefinger and thumblat the cut away end 11 of the plates, and the spring fingers 23, 23, which are fixed to .plate 8 and project through slots 24, 2ivtherein hold the Ynail against eXit at the end of the nozzle except when the nail is withdrawn forcibly between the thumband ,forefingen In this lmanner one nail at a time may Vbe taken by its head. or by its shank, Vbetween the thumb and forefinger, while the othernails are kept separated and retained by the detent, thus insuring a device which -is facile in manipulation, easy of access, and accurate and eilicient in performing its functions.
Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a nozzle having an open cut away end and comprising spaced rigidly connected side plates provided with slots and adapted to support the heads of nails on their upper edges, of an oscillatable housing pivoted between the said plates and consisting of oppositely disposed members having, respectively, a retaining detent and an ej ecting pawl operative in said slots, and spring` fingers near the cut away end to retain a nail.
2. The combination with il. nozzle having an opening in its bottom and comprising spaced, rigidly connected, slotted, side plates adapted to support the heads of nails on their upper edges, of an oscillatable housing comprising a pair of spaced rigidly connect- Ved plates pivoted between the side plates of the nozzle and provided with a detent and an oppositely located co-acting ejecting pawl operative in said slotted side plates, and a. spring between adjoining plates1 of the housing and nozzle to hold the detent in retaining position.
