T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON MNISZEWSKI, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Posen, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drill-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The hitherto known drill plows, operated by motor power, have not solved the problem of creating a suitable drill plow on account of their enormous power losses, and this is the cause, that the drill plow, which should occupy the first place among the soil treating implements, is nearly completely unknown in agriculture. My novel invention however has solved this problem and has realized a suitable, economically operating drill plow, in which power losses are avoided and in which by a suitable device the drill plow accommodates itself to any condition of the soil.
To prove the technical advantages of my novel drill plow as compared with the hitherto known drill plows, the following explanation is referred to.
A modern plow should effect the most advantageous treatment of the soil with the least loss of power and time. These requirements are complied with in my novel drill plow, which utilizes the drilling for the treatment of the soil, the moclus of operation of the drills being applied to the modern rapid drilling operation and not to the antiquated slow drilling system.
It has been found by practice, that the soil layer, which can be taken up by a drill at each revolution in the advance movement, amounts to a cm. at the most; accordingly also the advance movement of the plow at each drill revolution must not amount to more than 4 cm.
In the known drill plows the drills and traction wheels are driven by one motor; this however is unsuitable, as, if, on the one hand the motor with for instance 1200 revolutions per minute is directly coupled with the drills, on the other hand the revolutions of the traction wheels, if the latter for instance have a diameter of 80 cm., must be reduced from 1200 revolutions to 20 revolutions per minute, in order to advance the plow at each drill revolution for 4 cm. However such an abnormal reduction of the velocity of a motor is equal to the complete annulment of the efiiciency of said motor; besides, the drill plow could not move at all Specification of Letters Patent.

from its position with these power losses, resulting from the reduction of revolutions.
In the subject matter of the application however the advantages of the modern rapid drilling system are obtained by the provision of two suitable special motors with numbers of revolutions corresponding to the work to be performed by said motors, i. c. of a high speed motor of for instance 1200 revolutions per minute for operating the drills, and of a slow speed special motor of for instance revolutions per minute for driving the traction wheels. By this provision of two suitable motors not only the practical use of an opportunely operating drill plow is realized, but also an enormous gain of power, as compared with the hitherto known drill plows operated by one motor, is obtained.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section of the drill plow according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the mechanism connecting the slow speed motor with the front traction wheel.
Upon a truck frame fitted up for a drill plow, two suitable motors are mounted, it is shown by way of example in the drawing. One of the same, a high speed motor, serves for operating the drills 14, while the other, a slow speed motor, serves for driving the traction wheels.
The drill motor is connected with the drills by means of the spur gear wheels 2 and the bevel gear wheels 13, mounted upon the main shaft 1, the last named gear wheels meshing with the bevel gear wheels 15 upon the drill shafts 14-.
The traction motor is connected with the traction wheels in the following manner: The bevel gear wheel 5, secured upon the shaft 5 of the traction motor, meshes with a second bevel gear 4, secured upon a special shaft 11. Upon this special shaft 11 a chain wheel 7 is secured, which is connected with the chain wheel 10, mounted upon the axle of the traction wheels, by means of an intermediate chain wheel 12 and chains 8.
Very essential in a drill plow is the correctly applied ratio of velocity of the drills to the advance movement of the plow, furthermore the automatic regulation of said ratio of velocity during the operation, when changes in the condition of the soil are encountered.
As with the provision of two motors, the
drills would run independently of the traction wheels, it is necessary, that both motors be operatively connected in proportion to their revolutions by means of a suitable gearing or the like, whereby the two motors to a certain extent form. one combination-motor, one half of which operates rapidly, while the other half operates slowly. The drill motor per se is more powerful than the traction motor; in consequence thereof the latter is always dependent of the revolutions of the drill motor, this condition being very essential for the exact operation of the plow.
The operative connection of the two motors effects, on account of its adaptability, the automatic regulation of the advance movement to the actual velocity of rotation of the drills. As the condition of the soil of a particular field changes continuously and as, on account thereof, the number of revolutions of the drills continuously falls or rises, the advance movement of the plow must be correspondingly slower or quicker. If it is assumed, that the drill motor or the drills respectively make 1200 revolutions per minute, the advance movement of the plow during the same period of time must amount to 1200 4 cm.:48 m. with 60 revolutions of the traction motor and 20 revolutions of the traction wheels. If on account of diflicultly treatable soil the revolutions of the drills drop to 1100 per minute, the advance movement must be brought in accordance therewith and must amount to 1100 X4 cnr ta m. with 55 revolutions of the traction motor and 185 revolutions of the traction wheels. By this automatic adaptability the utmost utilization of the motor power for each single centimeter of the advance movement is obtained.
Accordingly the essence of the invention is based as well upon the provision of two motors, conditioned by the high speed of the drills in comparison with the slow speed of the traction wheels, as upon the operative connection of the two motors. The provision of the two motors as well as the opera tive connection of the same represents each a solved problem and the cooperation of the two ideas realizes an opportunely and correctly operating drill plow.
The main shaft 1 is connected at one end with the shaft 2" of the drill motor by means of the spur wheels 2; on the other end of the main shaft 1 a screw gear 6 is mounted, which meshes with a screw wheel 3, secured upon a special shaft 11. Upon the same shaft 11 is mounted and rigidly connected with the screw wheel 3 a bevel gear wheel 1, which latter meshes with a second bevel gear wheel 5 mounted upon the shaft of the traction motor.
By the screw gear 6 and the screw wheel 3 the ratio of 1200 revolutions of the drill motor to the 60 revolutions of the traction motor, that means of 20 1, is obtained. Accordingly, the two motors are operatively connected corresponding to their number of revolutions and must maintain their number of revolutions in correct ratio to each other. The traction wheels are connected to the traction motor by suitable chain wheels in order to effect the reduction of the revolutions of the traction motor from 60 to 20.
l Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a drill plow of the character described, in combination, with the earth working tools and traction wheels thereof, separate source of power for said earth working tools and traction wheels respectively, and means for interconnecting said sources of power for automatically regulating one another speed, substantially as described.
