Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 13, 1915. Serial No. 66,402.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC WALSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RuptureSuspensories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to appliances for treating hernias or ruptures, and its object is to provide an appliance of this kind which can be worn without discomfort and which can be easily applied and fitted to the person.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hernial appliance which is simple and inexpensive, and which will effectually retain the hernia or rupture, and in some instances effect a cure.
WVith the object stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter de scribed and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the appliance; Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the pad of the device, and Fig. 3 is an elevation showing a double pad.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a waist-encircling strap or belt having its ends adj ustably connected by a buckle or similar device 6. The front portion of this strap carries a suspensory band or bag 7 for the scrotum, and also a pad 8 which is held over the seat of the rupture.
The suspensory band 7 is a relatively wide sheet of suitable textile fabric which is sewed or otherwise fixed at one end to the strap 5 to depend therefrom, and having secured to its opposite free end a strap 9, which latter has its ends adjustably connected by a buckle or similar device 10. Said strap 9 is fixed to the band in parallel relation to the strap 5 to prevent the band from folding as much as possible. The sheet has a slight downward taper, and is provided with an aperture 11 for the penis.
The pad 8 is secured to the inner face of the sheet 7, and it is located to one side of the aperture 11, according to whether the rupture is on the right or on the left side. For a double rupture, two pads 8 will be provided, as shown in Fig. 3, the same being located respectively on opposite sides of the aperture 11. Where a single pad is employed, as shown in Fig. 2, the sheet 7 also has a small pad 12 on the opposite side of the aperture 11.
The upper end of the pad 8 terminates at the top edge of the sheet 7 where the strap 5 crosses the same. It will therefore be seen that the pad may be firmly held over the seat of the rupture upon tightening up the strap 5, and the pressure may be regulated as desired or required, by means of the buckle 6.
In use, the strap 5 is passed around the waist, close to the hips, and as far down as possible, so as to locate the pad 8 over the inguinal region and the seat of the rupture. The penis is assed through the aperture 11, and the free end of the sheet 7 is carried downward and back to form a bag or pouch of the wide lower portion for inclosing the scrotum, in which position the sheet is held bv the strap 9. The two ends-of the strap 9 pass from the groin around the back of the legs, close to the buttocks, and are then carried forward and around the upper portion of the thighs, and connected by the buckle 10, after being properly tightened up. The front portion of the strap 5 has loops 13 under which the front portions of the strap 9 pass, whereby the latter strap is prevented from slipping down, and the sheet is securelv held in supporting position.
The appliance can be easily fitted and adjusted to the person according to the condition and location of the affected parts. The entire perineal region is firmlv su orted, and the rupture is effectually retained, the use of the appliance, in some cases effecting a complete cure. The appliance is also simple and inexpensive, and it can be worn without discomfort.
I claim:
A hernial appliance, comprising a fiat susnensory band having a pad at its top portion. and provided with an aperture, a belt 100 in presence of two witnesses.
