IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,688, dated October l0, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK P. BALDWIN and CHARLES T. SEGAR, of Utica, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a speciiication The object of our invention is to produce spring bedbottoms which shall be stronger, more durable, and more elastic than any spring bed-bottom heretofore constructed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing'.

To the bottom proper A, consisting of wooden slats a a, which are held together by cross slats b I), are India-rubber cushions c c, placed at certain convenient distances from each other, which are fastened to the slats by the aid of screws rl d. Spiral springs B B are placed on the top of these said India-rubber cushions by the aid of hooks or staples, which penetrate into the wood below. The top part O of our improved spring bed-bottom consists of metal strips s s which are riveted together, as represented. To this top part are bolted short wooden slats c e, which are thus independent of each other. To these slats c c are againfastened India-rubber cushions c c, of the same shape as those to the bottom part, fastened on which again the upper part of the spiral springs B B rest, and are again held to the rubber cushions and the short slats e e bythe aid of hooks or staples. For the purpose of hanging and lowering our spring bed-bottom we place on the bottom cross-slats iron or metal supporters D, which we nd in practice to be much superior to placing a spring bed-bottom on wooden slats as is generally done.
Having thus fully described our improved spring bed-bottom, We wish to claim- A spring bed-bottom, construct-ed as hereinbefore set forth and described, where the Indiarubber cushions c o are used in combination With the springs B B and the metallic strips s s, the short Wooden slats c e, and the support D, all
