ROSWELL H. ST. JOHN, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,665, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RoswnLL H. ST. J oHN, of Bellefontaine, Logan county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Hinge for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This hinge, for connecting the bed-plate of the works to the table, is so constructed as to prevent the vibration of the works being communicated to the table, and thereby avoid or lessen the jar and noise incident to the reciprocation of the moving parts. It is designed for those machines which are turned back to enable the parts beneath the bed-plate to be examined or adjusted.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinge in detached parts.

rIhe hinge consists of a leaf, A, and a stem, B, the latter having' a resilient sleeve which intervenes between the stem and the table. The leaf A is of such form as may be required, according to the character of the bed-plate, a portion of which is represented at D. E is a portion of the table on which the working' portion of the machine is imposed. F is the pintle of the hinge; B, the stem. C C` O are rings of India rubber, which isolate the metal of the stem from the table. b is a shoulder on the stem, resting on the upper ring of rubber. b is a washer, and b a pin to keep the latter against the lower ring G. The three rings combine to form a sleeve. I have shown this as one form of my invention, but I do not comine myself to the shape. Asingle sleeve or wrapper may be made to answer the purpose.
In my former patent, dated March 21, 1871, I separated the two leaves of a sewing-machine hinge by intervening India rubber, so that tremor imparted to one leaf by the works is absorbed to a considerable extent and not imparted to the lower leaf, which is attached to the table. The rubber isolates metal from metal, and decreases the jar and noise by arresting it at this point, thus preventing the communication of the tremor to the table and floor of the apartment. In the present invention thelower portion is isolated from the table and stand, arresting the tremor at that point.
I am aware that hinges have been screwed onto a pad of cloth or rubber which intervenes between one leaf of the hinge and the object to which it is screwed; but in this case the heads of the screws rest on the metal of the hinge, and the worm of the screw is in such intimate contact with said object that the tremor is communicated from they hinge thereto.

What I do claim is- A hinge, one or both of whose members is clothed with resilient material on those portions which come in contact with the object to which it is attached to perfectly isolate it therefrom, for the purpose described.
