Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS O. RICHARDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-NAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,648, dated October 3, 1871 antedated September 30, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS C. RICHARDS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Glass or Porcelain Picture-Nail Head 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a central section of my improved picture-nail head. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide the public with a new and improved article of manufacture in the line of picture-nails; and consists in the construction and-arran gement of the porcelain scalp or head, a nut secured thereto by lead or its equivalentrun into a cavity of said head,
' and having a central screw-threaded perforation to receive the head of the spike, all as hereinafter described.
A in thc drawing represents the porcelain or glass picturenail head, made of suitable form and size. B is the lead iilling poured into the cavity which is formed on the inner side of the head. This lead filling serves to retain the nut O, which is easily applied while the lead is in a liquid state. The nail D, containing' a screwthread atfone end, is readily screwed into the nut C whenever desired. For screw-Shanks the nut may have a left-hand thread.
I am aware that sockets of lock-spindles have been secured in door-knobs by means of lead run in in a molten state, as illustrated in the patent granted to T. J. Sloan, April 13, 1869; also that spindle-sockets have been secured in knobs formed of glass, the same being placed in the mold before the glass is poured in, as in the patent of S. Richards, dated October 31, 1881. I do not broadly claim these features; but I do claim to be the iirst one to adapt these old devices to a driving shank.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A driving-shank, screw-threaded upon its upper end,l a nut into which the shank is screwed, and a glass or porcelain scalp properly recessed to receive the nut, which is secured therein by lead or its equivalent, substantially as set forth and shown.
Witnesses: THOMAS O. RICHARDS.
