Description

3. W. BIRSONG. COMBINED RAIL CLAMP AND CHAIR: APPU'ATmN mfp FEB. 19. 191s.
Patened Aug. 29. 916.
JOHN W. BIRDSONG, OF COI-IAY, MISSISSIPPI.
COMI INED RAIL CLAMI AND CHAIR.
Application filed Firuary 19, 1916. Serial No. 79,417.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN WV. BninsoNo, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Cohay, in the county of Smith andv State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Combined Rail Clamps and Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact4v description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a combined rail clamp and chair, that will effectively hold the rail against creeping and 'will admit of the rail clamp being held in oper'ative position without the use of spikes, and will also admit of the strain caused by the vibration of the rails during the passage of rolling stock thereover being equally dis-I tributed throughout the chair and clamp and relieve the retaining means for the.
cation, reference being had tothe acc0m-v paiiying drawings forming a part thereof,
in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse section taken i through one of the rails ot' a track, and
slimving the rail resting on the improved chair and clamped to the chair by the chimp, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, Figiis a reverse plan view of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view et' the under side ot' the clamping member.
Referring-to thedrawings more in detail, the niniicrkal 1 designates rail chair, provided at one end thereof with a raised portion 2, which forms a Aseat for the base flange 3 ot the rail 4. The raised portion 2 has its upper surface provided, at one end thereof, with a i'ail base-engaging laiige 5, adapted to cngageover the base fiange 3 of the rail and assist in holding the rail in operative position. |The opposite end ot the chair 2 is provided with a pair ot' openings adapted to receive spikes tor securing the chair to a tie. The portion 2 has that ciid which opposite the end which has the fiaiige 5 formed thereon undercut, to provide the ilange 7. i
' spegincacion of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug.
Pivotally associated with therail chair 1 ata point adjacent ,the raisedportion-2 isa. rail clamp 9, which has pivotal connection'y with the chair 1 by means of the pivot pin 10, which extends through the clamp 9 and theehair 1 at one end of the clamp, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The clamp 9 has its opposite end provided with atransn v'ersely extending slot 11, which is substam. tially V-shaped for the major portion of its.
length and the rear wall of the slotr 1 1 is curved inwardly adjacent .one side of the clamp, to' provide the cam surface 12, and the lower wall ot the slot-11 is cutaway and curved at a oint adjacent the cam surface 12',as is shown at 13.
In use, when it is desired to clainpthe rail' 4 to the chair 1, the clamping member 9 is swung to the position shown inv dotted linesea, wie. l
in Fig. 2, and the rail 4 mounted upon the raised portion 2, and engaged under the flange 5. The clamp member 9 is then swung to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to cause the upper and lower walls ot the slot 11 to engage, respectively, over the adjacent flange of the railand beneath the flange 7 formed on the adjacent endfof the raised portion 2, further movement of the clamp 9 being prevented by virtue of the rear wall of the slot 11 engaging against the adjacent edge ofthe flange 7, as shown in the drawings. Y
Having thus described my invention what I claim .as new, is:
1. device ot the class described comprising abase, a raised portion formed ,on the upper side oic the base at one end thereof,`a rail supported by the raised portion and the base, a flange formed on lone end of the raised portion and adapted to engage one side of the i'ail base, the opposite end of the raised portion being provided with atlange,` a clamping iiieinb'er pivotally associated with the base and having one edge thereof pro vided with a slot adapted when the clamping incinber is in operative position to I'e-.'V ceive the last-mentioiied fiange on the raised portion and one side of the rail base.
2. The combination vwith a base plate adapted to support aall and having a A llangc thereon for overlying one side of the rail, oi a clamp pivotally associated with the base and having one end thereof pro- `vided with a transverse slot adapted whenl the clamp is in operative position to receive .the flange on thelbase and one side of the base of the mii., said chimp having the reni In testimony whereof I uiix my signature Walil of the slot thereii provided with a cam in presence of two witnesses.
sur ace at one end o the Wn 1 and having T y T the longitudinnI lowerledge of the wall of JOHB XV' BIRDSOL G' the slot curved at one end thereof und z iglja.- Witnesses:
cent the cam surface on the inner wall oi S. W. HALL,
the slot, for the purpose specified'.I F. BLYKELLEY.
