GEORGE A. BROWN, OF READING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, SAMUEL O. DODGE, AND HENRY F. DOTY, OF SAME PLACE.

IMPROVEMENT IN BUGGY-SPRINGS AND ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,564, dated October 3, 1871.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BROWN, of Reading,'in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Buggy-Spring and Attachment 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac companying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature ofmy invention consists in constructing a spiral spring of sheet-steel or other suitable metal, D,ofa conical shape, from six-to eight inches in Width at the bottom to one and ahalf at the top, tapering, or of greater size as may be required. It is so constructed that each rin g of the spring when acted upon will shut one within the other, and being of a thickness in proportion to the Weight of the body in which it is to be placed. I make a cap for this spring, A, with a staple attached thereto, Whichhan gs downward in the spring. Inthe bottom ofthe buggy I cut the hole H close to the side. I require also four pulleys, B, two of which are placed in the opening H, as seenin Fig. l, and the other two are secured to the corners of the body. I construct the thorough-brace and reach E with eyes attached to the end of the C (C 0,) and require also a strap or other attachment of sufficient length and strength to uphold the body. To operate my spring and attachment, through the staple of the capA pass the strap half way, take hold of both ends of the strap and pass them through from the top of the spring D to the bottom, and through the hole H, which Will bring the spring over the hole and secure the cap upon the spring; rivet the two pieces of the strap together close below the staple, thus preventing the body from sliding upon the straps; take the end of the strap 9 nearest the back of the buggy and carrying it to the pulley on the corner of the body B and beyond, put it through the eye C attached to the C -piece E. The other part ofthe strap is carried to the front of the body and after passing the pulley on the front corner is put through the eye on the front C. The ends are then fastened. The parts above described being duplicated it is only necessary to combine them in the same manner to make the other side of the buggy, one side being but the repetition ofthe other. I consider that in cost, weight, and ease my buggyspring and attachment put onto a buggy will eX- cel any other, and that it Will also Wear longer.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of spiral springs, in connection with pulleys and other attachments, as herein set forth and described, and for the uses and purposes inferred herefrom.
