Description

J. E. PRESCOTT. METALLIC CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-6| 19x3 1,1 95,083. Patented Aug. 15,1916.
WITNESSES l/VVE/VTOR jfi k772i; 5 Prescott.
JAMES E. PRESCOTT, OF PASSA-IC, NEW JERSEY.
METALLIC CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Application filed August 6, 1913. Serial No. 783,270.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES E. PRESCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to sheet metal containers for containing shoe blacking, polishing preparations, ready-mixed paints, salves and other substances, and its object is to provide a new and improved metallic container having a tightly-fitting cover which can be quickly and conveniently pried open wltli the use of a coin or a tool whenever it is desired to obtain access to the contents of the container.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a drawn cylinder body provided at its side between the top and bottom portions thereof with an outwardlyextending annular bead, the said top portion of the side being in the form of a frustum of a cone, and a cover having a depending flange terminating at its lower edge in an outwardly-extendhig annular bead, the interior diameter of the said flange bead corresponding approximately to the exterior diameter of the said conical portion at a level a distance above the said body head, to provide a seating contact for the cover bead and to provide a prying space between the said body bead and the said cover bead at the time the cover is firmly seated on the said conical body portion.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the metallic container part being broken out and the coin being inserted between the -ody and cover beads for prying the cover open; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same.
The metallic container consists essentially of a sheet metal body A and a sheet metal body cover B, both drawn from sheet metal blanks in the usual manner. The body A is provided with a flat inset bottom A and a side having a lower cylindrical portion A and a conical upperportion A the portions A and A being connected with each other by an outwardly-extending annular bead A.
The cover B is provided with a flat inset top B and a depending flange B terminating at its lower edge in an outwardly-extending annular bead B The interior diameter of the bead B corresponds approximately to the exterior diameter of the conical body portion A at a point a distance above the head A to provide seating contact for the said cover bead B and to provide a prying space between the beads A and B for the insertion of a coin or a prying tool to permit of prying the cover B open whenever it is desired to obtain access to the contents of the container.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the conical upper portion A of the body A limits the downward movement of the cover B when the latter is forced in position, it being understood that the bead B is firmly seated on the conical portion A a distance above the bead A for the purpose previously mentioned. By the arrangement described the cover B is firmly held in place on the conical portion A of the body A.
In order to prevent the cover B from being forced downward too far on the conical portion A the latter is preferably provided with a minute annular ridge A which positively limits the downward movement of the bead B without however interfering with the prying space between the beads A and B so that a coin C or a prying tool can be conveniently inserted in the said prying space for prying the cover open whenever it is desired to do so.
The metallic container shown and described is very simple in construction and can be cheaply manufactured and the cover B can readily be forced in position on the conical portion of the body A or the cover can be pried open in a very simple manner whenever it is desired to obtain access to the contents of the container.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A sheet metal container, comprising a body provided at its side between the top and bottom portions thereof with an outwardly-extending annular head, the said top portion of the side being in the form of a frustum of a cone, a cover having a depending flange terminating at its lower edge in an outwardly-extending annular tubular bead, the interior diameter of the said flange bead corresponding approximately to the exterior diameter of the said conical body portion at a level a distance above the said body bead to provide a seating contact for the cover bead and to provide an unobstructed prying space between the said body bead and the said cover bead at the time the cover is firmly seated on the said conical body portion, and an integral minute ridge on the said conical upper body portion im- 10 mediately beloW the said seating contact.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES E. PRESCOTT.
