Application filed February 26, 1916. Serial No. 80,640.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLYDE STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to collapsible boxes, and while particularly adapted for use as a m lunch box it may be applied to the various uses-to which knockdown boxes or crates are after appear, and in order that said invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box being set up. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box opened to its fullest extent. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of a tray which constitutes a removable partition for the box. Fig. 4 is a broken plan View of one corner of the box set up ready foruse. Fig. 5 '1s a vertical longitudinal sectional view on line V-V of Fig. 6, of the box setup ready for use. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross section on line VI-VI.of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the box folded. Fig. 8 is a cross section on line VIII-VIII of Fig. 7.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a bottom 1 provided at its upturned margins with hinges 2 and 5. Sides 3 and 3 are connected to the hinges 2 and each has a hinge 4 intermediate its ends, so that when at; folded it will be of less width than the bottom 1, Fig. 8. Ends 7 and 8 are connected to the hinges 5, and the end 8 has a short section :9, connected to its outer end by a hinge 10. The short section 9 is connected W by a hinge 11 to a lid 12, providedwith a handle 13 and a resilient lip 14, which latter is ada ted to engage the upper portion of the en flap 7 when the box is set up in position for Ilse-,alid engage one of the up- M turned ends of the bottom when the box is in folded position, as disclosed by Fig. 7.

1 To set up the box from the position disclosed by Fig. 2, the sides 3 and 3 are raised to vertical position and secured by the ends 7 and 8, which in turn are held in upright position by-the hooks 15 which are passed through the slots 16 to engage the lower edges thereof. With the hooks 15 engaging the inner surface of the sides 3 and 3" and the beads on the margins 17 engaging theouter surface of said sides, it is apparent that the same are reliably secured from lateral movement. The sides 3 and 3 are also braced when the tray 18 is placed upon the hinges 4:. When closed the lid 12 is secured by its resilient lip 14 engaging the upper portion of the end 7. In order to fold the box into its most compact form the hooks 15 are removed from the slots 16, after which the sides 3 and 3 and the ends 7 and 8 are folded in the order mentioned. The lid 12 is then folded beneath the bottom 1 and its resilient lip 14: is brought into frictional engagement with onee nd of said bottom as disclosed by Fig. 7, and thus holds the box in folded position.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I have produced a collapsible box embodying the features of advantage above enumerated, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a collapsible box, a bottom having upturned margins, sides hinged to two of said margins to fold over the bottom, ends hinged -to the other two margins of said botupon themselves, a removable tray adapted tom to fold over the sides, a lid having a re-' to rest upon the last-mentioned hinges, ends silient lip to' secure the box in folded posihinged to the bottom, and means on the tion, ahandle on said lid, and a short section sides to engage said ends and hold the box '15 v 5 hinged to said lid andone of the ends to in set up position.
